Comic Book Preview: 7/11/12

Many books to be had this coming Wednesday including Batman #11, The Walking Dead #100 and a host of indie books. Scroll down to see some of our favorite covers, some honorable mentions and some downright befuddling works of art.

Brendan’s Pick

The Massive #2

Comic Book Preview: 7/11/12

J.P. Leon

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

Brendan: This is just a nice piece of art by Mr. J.P. Leon. It has a simple design that is then wrapped in complexities that allow you to find new things with each viewing. The character stencils in the background are very nice and you can get absolutely lost in the urban sprawl of the cluttered harbor.

Dave: The stark yellow works quite well with the aqua blue. I’m a little confused by the people at the center of the page, especially considering I read the first issue. Making the boat a silhouette was a great choice as it beckons the viewer to “dive right in.”

Dave’s Pick

Walking Dead #100

Comic Book Preview: 7/11/12

Ryan Ottley

Dave: Walking Dead #100 is here and there’s some choice alternate covers to be had from the likes of Marc Silvestri, Frank Quitely, Todd McFarlane, Bryan Hitch… I mean the list goes on and on. I went with Ryan Ottley’s because, well, there’s nothing cooler than slicin’ zombie heads. The swoosh of red in the background also adds a very nice element of energy that many of these alternate covers lack.

Brendan: There’s great action here along with great use of space. The severed head-chunks that fill in the foreground and background really give the cover depth and also add to the motion of the swing. Very cool.

Dave’s Honorable Mentions

Adventure Time: Marceline And The Scream Queens #1

Comic Book Preview: 7/11/12

Coleen Coover

Dave: Adventure Time is getting a spin off and I couldn’t be happier. Here’s a great cover to a comic that could serve as music album cover art. Love the axe guitar, the flames and the wicked jump.

Brendan: I love the lineless art style and the contrast of the dark rock colors against the feminine red and pinks. This cover is both fun and badass.

Creepy Comics #9

Comic Book Preview: 7/11/12

David Palumbo

Dave: And creepy it is. A cover that can tell a story is a good cover indeed. These hunters appear to have just found some hanged bodies in the middle of the woods on a cold day. How did this happen? I… must know – and that makes me want to buy this book. Consider yourself a salesman and an artist to this old bohy, David Palumbo!

Brendan: This is a damned creepy cover. I love the depth of the woods and the “oh shit” looks on the hunters faces.

Enormous (one shot)

Comic Book Preview: 7/11/12

Mehdi Cheggour

Dave: I’ve been looking forward to this book for a few months now and it’s finally here in all it’s, ahem, enormous glory. The colors are great, the sky is gorgeous and I think this title’s going to surprise a lot of people.

Brendan: If it weren’t for the pure epicness of this image I would have thrown it into the WTF category. The colors and scale are amazing and I suppose that it is just weird enough to make me want to open the book up and flip through the pages.

Bad Medicine #3

Comic Book Preview: 7/11/12

Christopher Mitten

Dave: Nothing says home like a house made of bleeding wolf heads. The quirky feel to the house, mixed with the red highlight on the steps and wispy smoke from the chimney sell this cover. You look at this and think “danger.”

Brendan: This is an awesome and surreal cover. I love the wolf heads and the warped design of the house.

Brendan’s Honorable Mentions

Batgirl #11

Comic Book Preview: 7/11/12

Stanley Lau

Brendan: Dat leg. Outside of what are most-likely obvious gripes with this cover (How did that guy get up there? Why/how would you kick a man so high into the air only to leave your precious lady-regions open for a vicious attack?) I find it gorgeous. The background shines bright and beautiful and I love the way each character’s hair has a pop of color.

Dave: The brightly lit background is quite nice and… I never thought I’d say this, Batgirl’s lustrous, flowing hair does indeed draw your eye to her. I don’t understand that leg though; it’s as if she’s balancing the guy with her toe or he’s falling onto her boot. Also the female baddy at the bottom right is more muscular than Jesse “The Body” Ventura. Scary.

Batman # 11

Comic Book Preview: 7/11/12

Greg Capullo

Brendan: Another very cool cover by Mr. Capullo. I love the way he captures the ominousness of Batman. The licks of flame taking the shapes of bats is a cool touch.

Dave:I like the flaming bats. Could one suggest this is a wink to the Phoenix storyline going on at Marvel? It appears Batman is rising from flames ala the Phoenix.

Broken Pieces #3

Comic Book Preview: 7/11/12

Cory Smith

Brendan: Something about the pale colors used here really makes me happy. I love the details to all the different textures that are present.

Dave: The expression on this person is a stark contrast to the monster man in the mirror which is very unnerving. That said that contrast is confusing. What exactly is going on between these characters? I’m confused and not in a good way.

Conan the Barbarian #6

Comic Book Preview: 7/11/12

Massimo Carnevale

Brendan: Great colors and great profiles make me love this cover. It’s nice to see Conan so head-over-heels smitten despite the bloody battle that transpires in his back ground. He deserves a nice war-queen.

Dave: Gotta love the blood splatter and the romantic moment in the heat of chaos.

WTF? Category

Where we don’t understand, are insulted by or would rather stab our eyes with acid pops than look at these covers for various reasons.

Demon Knights #11

Comic Book Preview: 7/11/12

Philip Tan

Brendan: This cover has a bad case of the blends. There is so much going on, and with so many similar colors I feel the artwork becomes somewhat lost. I admit that once you take some time to scan over this cover there is quality waiting for you. It’s just a matter of your reader having the patience to discover it.

Dave: Up the irons! What a Metal cover if I ever saw one. You could probably use this for any Slayer album cover and it’d make sense. I too was confused when I started to take a peek at this. The eyeball is a decidedly creepy addition.

Queen Sonja #30

Comic Book Preview: 7/11/12

Lucio Parrillo

Brendan: I have a question. Is there some sort of canological law or reasoning that prevents Sonja from wearing clothing? Is she habitually overheating? Is she a proud and outspoken nudist? Is it an attempt at some tactical advantage by causing whatever monster or man she is fighting to be mesmerized by her lady-bits? Regardless of this small gripe I think this cover is damn fine. Nice use of colors and well executed human (and inhuman) forms.

Dave: Yup, that’s a naked ass, alright. (Besides the tattered scrap of leather that inexplicably circumscribes her waistline.) Though let’s not let such shameless sex appeal deter us from the the fact that the color work is outstanding. Give the colorist an award as the contrast in the hues of Sonja and the monster are just eye-poppingly enjoyable.

Resurrection Man #11

Comic Book Preview: 7/11/12

Pete Woods

Brendan: I’ve seen enough Hentai to know where this is going…

Dave: Are those metal or organic? Doc Ock is going to be pissed.

Punk Rock Jesus #1

Comic Book Preview: 7/11/12

Sean Murphy

Dave: Yet another cover that could be swapped with a Rock music album. This comic is about “…the TV series starring a clone of Jesus Christ.” Need it say more for you to purchase it? The green spray paint splatter, the fingerprint on the face and the upside down cross screams three things at once. “Let’s get loud.” Sure it’s offensive but it’s also punk.

Brendan: I passed this cover over since it has a bit of a Battle Pope vibe. Sometimes people mock religion because it’s just the easiest thing to mock. It’s like picking on the fat kid in school. No creativity necessary. That said, I’ve been a fan of Sean Murphy’s for years now and while I’m incredibly excited for him to be releasing his own creative content, I just wish it looked to be a bit more creative.

Deathstroke #11

Comic Book Preview: 7/11/12

Rob Liefeld

Dave: Wolverine… is that you? Now I know Logan didn’t copyright this pose, but you throw this into Paint and add some claws to this bad boy and you have yourself a Wolverine cover. I dig Lobo joining the New 52 but…huh?

Brendan: I have almost reached the point in my life where I don’t even want to make fun of Liefeld any more. It’s just too easy.

Dave: Keyword. Almost. Way to suck, Liefeld.

Crow #1

Comic Book Preview: 7/11/12

Ashley Wood

Brendan: Does this cover mean something to anyone? It’s dark and moody, I get that. But it is also so abstract that it seems devoid of content. Maybe I’m just missing something.

Dave: It means something to Ashley Wood’s momma! I have to admit I think this is a good piece of art, but I don’t know what it’s trying to tell me. Isn’t the point of a cover to draw interest into the story? I guess it works if it’s one messed up dream.

Space Punisher #1

Comic Book Preview: 7/11/12

Mark Teixeira

Brendan: Fuck. Yes.

I don’t know when it happened, but some time ago, the Punisher became Marvel’s Ambush Bug. Not in the sense of 4th wall breakage– that’s a title that obviously belongs to Wade Wilson — but in terms of generally ridiculous plot points and nonsensical story lines? Frank takes the cake.

After not only killing his entire universe’s cast of characters (twice) and becoming a resurrected Franken-monster, where does one go from there? You throw that fucker into space. I think this cover perfectly embodies the silliness we can from such a title. Frank has his guns drawn, his rocket-boots ablazin’, and his war face in full scream. My best advice would be “get out of his way”

Dave: “In space… no one can hear you Punish.” I love this cover and all the stupidity that goes into it. What did the astronaut ever do to you Frank?
