Comic Book Preview: 9/19/12

A list of this week’s comics are discussed and the best and worst cover art is dissected. A full list of the biggest releases is also available at the bottom. Enjoy!

Dave’s Cover of the Week

Lobster Johnson: Caput Mortuum

Comic Book Preview: 9/19/12

Tonci Zonjic

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

Dave: If an artist uses that crisp-looking fall orange I’m sold no matter what. Just look at the my favorite Batman cover of all time. That said, whatever technique they used to get the city lights to shine like that is really pretty. This effect would look equally awesome with any other crime fighter. I’m looking at you, Batman. Why can’t you get such a cool cover? That’s it; we’re broken up!

Brendan: This is a great cover that really could be used for any superhero silhouette. I’m glad they used it for Lob-Jon, though. The city really seems to be alive and I have to give props for the typography. All around a nice cover.

Brendan’s Cover of the Week

Fables #121

Comic Book Preview: 9/19/12

Joao Ruas

Brendan: This cover is downright terrifying. The haunting use of negative space to create this demonic little girl along with great placement of lettering really drives the creep-factor home. That eye is piercing into my soul. I’m going to have nightmares because of this cover.

Dave: Beady eyes represent! Not sure a cover could be any more chilling. The use of the slate color and minimalism draw the viewers eye in and get trapped in its horror.

Dave’s Honorable Mentions

Spider-Men #5 (Varianet)

Comic Book Preview: 9/19/12

Travis Charest

Dave: I’m choosing to show this cover without the titles mostly because the stupid titles cover up that beautiful hanging car at top. Sure, this cover gives a hell of a lot of Spidey-cheek, but I think the composition here is stellar. The weight of the vehicles and swinging of Spidey add some much needed reality to this cool cover.

Brendan: I do enjoy the cover. The web is remarkably intricate and we never really get to see a shot of Spidey beginning his swing. Also, the buildings in the background are just very gorgeous. My only gripe would be that this is a Spider-MEN cover. Where’s my Miles?

Godzilla Half Century War #2

Comic Book Preview: 9/19/12

James Stokoe

Dave: I loved Stokoe’s cover for the first issue and this one doesn’t disappoint either. His hyper detailed style is incredibly original and his use of purple (a staple of his) wins me over every time.

Brendan: For some reason, in a lot of cases, the giant monster thing doesn’t translate well into comics. I recall seeing a lot of old Godzilla comic covers that would simply depict the green guy, maybe a foe, in rather stoic and uninteresting poses. Stokoe, on the other hand, brings the action all day. He has an amazing ability to depict the rampant chaos that would transpire if a gigantic lizard was strolling through town.

Daredevil #18

Comic Book Preview: 9/19/12

Paolo Rivera

Dave: What a great idea for a cover, especially considering how writer Mark Waid has been disassembling Daredevil over the last few months, poking and prodding his psyche. I also love the inverse color of the clubs and how they contrast with the dark background.

Brendan: It’s a well executed concept for a cover. I suppose the sticks are necessary to really showcase who it is we’re looking at, but I think it may have worked better without them. Then again, perhaps it was a bit too simple without them, so maybe I should just shut up. An interesting thing to notice is that DD’s horns are part of his circulatory system. Betcha didn’t know that.

Call of Wonderland #4

Comic Book Preview: 9/19/12

Pasquale Qualano

Dave: This is a really nice cover, largely because of the composition with the focus of the bad guy magnified with the glowing moon. The figures are well done and I love the inking across the board. The dripping blood is also pretty sweet. Whoever colors these comics needs to get a raise. The skin always looks amazing.

Brendan: The design here is masterfully done. A good artist can really force your focus where they chose, and Qualano does this. On top of excellent placement, the figures and setting are well executed.

Artifacts #21

Comic Book Preview: 9/19/12

Stjepan Sejic & Stjepan Sejic

Dave: We must be getting close to Halloween because this cover is frighteningly good. The painting of the ghoul/zombies is gorgeous. The red lighting draws our interest in while the ghouls want us to run. Even the background is delectably haunting. I certainly wouldn’t want to be on a rooftop with these monsters hovering over my shoulders.

Brendan: Those demons in the background look straight-up real. The lighting on the woman is also fantastic. This cover is haunting and I am into it.

Brendan’s Honorable Mentions

Ghost #0

Comic Book Preview: 9/19/12

Jenny Frison

Brendan: This cover would definitely be my top pick if that damned Fables piece hadn’t clawed its way into my soul. This cover succeeds in every area. The woman is a seductive yet haunting figure with some beautiful flowing robes. The placement and depth of the gravestones really fill out the image. Everything depicted has an excellent balance of grimness and beauty. It’s a damn fine cover.

Dave: The glow, or is it heat, coming off this chick is mystical and I dig it. The thick cell-shading look always rubs me the right way.

Avengers Academy #37

Comic Book Preview: 9/19/12

Giuseppe Camuncoli

Brendan: This cover is also amazing. Beyond Mettle having a very bad day, it’s the attention to detail that really sells me. The simple touches given to the discs and walls make the room look alive. I also love the subtle touch of the heart silhouette on the wall which, when coupled with the irradiated green smoke rising from Mettle’s leftovers, tells you an entire story (if you know the AA backstory).

Dave: These Avengers Academy covers have been getting more and more horrific as the months have gone on. Radiation is bad, especially when it burns a hole through your body.

30 Days of Night #30

Comic Book Preview: 9/19/12

Christopher Mitten

Brendan: I think what really gets me with this cover is the fluid sense of motion we get from our happy-go-lucky vamp swooping down from the sky. That, plus the facial expressions that really just tell us everything, has me loving this cover.

Dave: It’s pretty neat how this dude’s legs wrap around the top of the cover. What an evil grin he’s got, too.

Spider-Men #5 (Variant)

Comic Book Preview: 9/19/12

Sara Pichelli

Brendan: Am I the only one who thinks that right before this moment was captured, Peter Parker said, “Hey guys, can we do that thing where we all walk badass towards the camera in slow-mo?” and everyone begrudgingly agreed?

Dave: This crew sure does have the “right stuff”. Am I right? Google it!

WTF? Category

Where we don’t understand, are insulted by or would rather stab our eyes with acid pops than look at these covers for various reasons.

Catwoman #0

Comic Book Preview: 9/19/12

Guillem March

Dave: As I understand it, March changed this cover after a public outcry which stemmed from the first cover on left. He then redid it which is the cover on the right. Either way, the cover is downright stupid. Her pose has nothing to do with action and everything to do with showing off both T and A in a rather funky position. Given, March did improve on the first image (just look at her head and how it doesn’t seem to be in the right place at left) but it’s still a terrible cover.

Brendan: I think the main problem originates from Catwoman having nothing interesting to offer the reader. She is here for the T and the A so that is what is pushed at us. I have to agree that cover right is a vast improvement over cover left. At least in cover left she doesn’t look like she belongs in a Tarot: WoTBR comic.

True Blood Ongoing #5

Comic Book Preview: 9/19/12

Photoshopped by Tim Bradstreet

Brendan: I know I brought this up a couple weeks back, but this cover really just drives my point home. It looks like they cut back on the hours Mr. Bradstreet could spend Photoshopping each cover. It was sad before. Now it’s just disappointing.

Dave: Brendan is clearly harboring deep-seated frustration over these hot little boys. He wishes they’d get off the flat cover and jump into bed with him. At least that’s what he told me on the 45 voicemails he left me about True Blood.
