Comic Book Preview: 1/9/13

That’s right, friends. We’re back again with this week’s offering of beautiful cover images for your eye consumption. Let us join hands and bask in the glory of the pretty ones, the thought behind the nice ones, and the fear-mongering confusion of the WTF ones.

Dave’s Cover of the Week

Avengers Arena #3 Variant

Comic Book Preview: 1/9/13

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

Garry Brown

Dave: Damn, this cover blasts you in the face with incredible energy. The dot matrix on everything but our blue lady does a great job keeping everything outside the light exciting.

Brendan: This cover does pop with electricity. The color selection is wonderful. I love how the blues and purples give off a “so cold it’s hot” feeling. Beyond the colors, the action here is alive and intense. It’s a great cover all around.

Brendan’s Cover of the Week:

Fairest #11

Comic Book Preview: 1/9/13

Adam Hughes

Brendan: I can’t help it: I simply love the way Hughes draws women. On top of that, we have a cover from him that is both not cheesecake and in a variant artistic style? Points in all categories, Adam! There is a genuine simplicity to this piece that really catches my eye. With only a few pencil lines and some well blended colors Hughes creates this gorgeous specimen.

Dave: I can’t believe how lifelike the bruising looks. The messy greens and reds also have a disturbing quality that’s delectable. I even love the green splatter she’s…coughing? The eyeshadow is also incredible. Love this cover.

Dave’s Honorable Mentions:

Eerie Comics #2

Comic Book Preview: 1/9/13

Jim Pavelec

Dave: I don’t know what the hell is going on in this chick’s chest, but her face and the lighting capture my imagination. This is disgustingly peaceful… yet I also get the impression that this beast could jump right out at us at any moment.

Brendan: The lighting is spectacular. It shows off just enough of this figure to convince you want to see more. There darkened limbs looming in the background really give you a sense that this serene face is not giving you the full concept.

Brendan’s Honorable Mentions:

B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth #103: The Abyss of Time Part 1 (Of 2)

Comic Book Preview: 1/9/13

James Arren

Brendan: Here’s the thing: If you like the Mignola style of artwork then every BRPD/Hellboy cover is going to be an amazing cover. I love that different artists have been able to capture the Hellboy essence while providing their own individual flairs to the artwork. It’s like a comic book version of cover songs.

Dave: I wanted to pick this cover but didn’t only because the texture of the Egyptian-esque character looming in the background and the men in the foreground seemed off to me. That said I love the way the equipment pops from the black and blue.

Mind The Gap #7

Comic Book Preview: 1/9/13

Rodin Esquejo

Brendan: While the art and the message are rather simple and straightforward, they present a message I can get behind. I love the light bloodening of our man’s tee shirt, accurately summarizing the sacrifice that goes with giving someone your heart, either figuratively or literally.

Dave: Wow, these two are extremely calm. I guess they started watching Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom from a young age. Kali Ma Shakti De!

Russ: “Dave no nuts, he crazy!”

Artifacts #24

Comic Book Preview: 1/9/13

Stjepan Sejic

Brendan: Any way you slice it this is simply well done artwork. With nothing but a pencil Sejic has crafted a rich and complex piece with subtle detail that maintain your interest.

Dave: This is a well composed cover due to the borders and background. I’m glad they didn’t slap color on this thing because that would have ruined the aged quality.

WTF? Category

Where we don’t understand, are insulted by or would rather stab our eyes with acid pops than look at these covers for various reasons.

Army Of Darkness #8

Comic Book Preview: 1/9/13

Daniel Leister

Dave: Even though we have demons crawling on walls and grabbing the protagonists I feel no sense of dread or excitement. Maybe it’s Ash’s bored facial expression but this cover is amazingly lacking in the energy department. Something about the zombies gripping the protagonists yet not hurting them makes me think they’re hugging.

Brendan: You would think by this point in his career Ash would be pretty tired of these scenarios. I strike him as the kind of guy to lean towards a “Not this again” approach to any form of real dread or drama. The weirdest thing about this cover is that they replaced your average generic damsel clutching Ash’s shoulder with an equally distressed dude. While it is a nice change of pace, I must admit that it doesn’t really work.

Mars Attacks KISS

Comic Book Preview: 1/9/13

Ray Dillon

Brendan: That’s right, it’s the comic book crossover that no one knew they wanted. I’m still a bit confused by the premise, however. Are the Martians attacking the band KISS (It is proper to always capitalize KISS, right?) Because from out art here it looks like there are KISS versions of the Martians wreaking havoc on our world. In all honesty both scenarios leave me pretty depressed.

Dave: I love the jumping jacks the Martian is doing at the top left. Best to get some cardio in when killing humans.
