This week, DC gets back to tentacles, Abe Sapien fights demons, maggots get featured and Thanos rises.

Where we don’t understand, are insulted by or would rather stab our eyes with acid pops than look at these covers for various reasons.
Ame-Comi Girls #2
Dave: It’s been a while, but finally DC had the nerve to give us another tentacle cover! My memory might be off, but it seems to always be DC wrapping their characters, mostly female mind you, in tentacles. I suppose this is an improvement considering the tentacles are coming from a female, but that doesn’t mean she won’t be probing Power Girl shortly.
Brendan: Yeah, man! I want more dudes wrapped up in rape tentacles! Who doesn’t want to see a vulnerable Batman struggling for his life trapped betwixt some ambiguously sexual Joker-tentacles?

’68: Jungle Jim #1 (of 4)
Dave: All the power to Jeff and Jay, but when it comes to creepy crawlies on the human body I’m peacing out. Can’t do it. Sorry. Grossamonga!
Brendan: I really wasn’t that skeezed out until I noticed that one grub that has made his way onto the iris. That was the moment where I said “Nope.” But seriously, props to these guys on making a gruesome cover that is neither gratuitous nor blatantly shocky.
Miss Fury #1
Brendan: I mean, I’m not the only one who sees Catwoman, right? This “original” character bears a striking resemblance to the ultra-famous Bat villain, right? Despite blatant similarities this cover is pretty well done. I love the smoke effect and Ross sure knows how to draw and light the female form.
Dave: Considering all the trippy multi-colored covers Ross has done over the last year (some of which we’ve highlighted in our previews) I really appreciate the subtlety of this cover. The smoke is magical, but the red used sparingly highlights the fire coming off this chick. I think it’s her cape, but that’s alright. She’s smokin!

Brendan’s Honorable Mentions
Thanos Rising #1
Brendan: Guys! Quick! We have to make Thanos a household name by 2014!
But seriously, I’m just glad to see my favorite dude from Titan back in the spotlight. My favorite thing about this cover is the way Djurdjevic drew Thanos in such a monstrous tone. I mean, yeah, Thanos has always been a big evil purple dude but in this instance he looks downright unnatural. This cover gives me high hopes for this miniseries.
Dave: With Guardians of the Galaxy and now this it’s pretty clear Marvel is curtailing their stories so that when the movies are released there will be fresh trade paperbacks ready to be purchased. And I’m cool with that. It works out nicely too since Thanos has been gone for ages now.
He’s got a magic thing going on in this cover which I like. It’s all in the articulation of the hands, which help make this hulking muscle man delicately evil all at the same time.
Dave’s Honorable Mentions
Swamp Thing #19
Dave: Scarecrow should always be this frightening. Love the detail in the sickle and face. Of course, the real beauty of this cover is all in our man Thing. The elegant detail of his chest and arm is exquisite. I guess this means Scarecrow is getting into fertilizer serums.
Brendan: Oh shit, that’s Scarecrow? That makes this cover Grade A. Much like Dave’s sentiments, anyone who can draw Scarecrow in a truly haunting way gets a pass in my book. I think Brase’s style is perfect for Swamp Thing. The way he is able to create these unnatural organic details works incredibly on this cover.
Indestructible Hulk #6
Dave: I’m more than certain Simonson holds the award for best artist to draw Thor ever. The man simply has an incredibly unique style, especially since most artists take a glossy, cleaner style when drawing superheroes these days. His sketchy style adds an incredible amount of depth and articulation to everything he does.
Brendan: Poor Hulk just wants to pick up the hammer! I think the sketchy style really helps add to the drama of our green guy struggling with the universe’s heaviest object. It’s a shame that we lose this entire ghost army that seems to be hidden in the background of this cover.
Dave’s Cover of the Week
Abe Sapien #1: Dark and Terrible Part 1
Dave: If you’ve been reading the previews over the last year you know I love me a cover that’s telling a story. This cover does just that. We’re in the middle of something—Hellboy doesn’t appear on monsters’ backs every old day—and the sword through said monster’s nose is a nice touch indeed. How did they get into this predicament?! I want to know because of this awesome cover.
Brendan: This is your typical action cover done correctly. So often these types of covers end up being stale and generic but, lucky for us, Fiumara knows how to instill drama into his work.
Brendan’s Cover of the Week
Polarity #1
Brendan: I love everything that we have going on here. The characters, the coloring and the layering are all at the highest of quality. Despite the overabundance of things occurring on the page I don’t feel lost or overwhelmed. There is an impressive flow to the chaos that could have easily been mishandled.
Dave: Wow, this is one trippy collage going on in here. I love how the character’s head is drawn simply, but also in one motion with the lines drawn down. It helps separate it from the insanity coming out of his hair. It’s creepy, exciting and on top of all that fun to look at.
