California may be “the Golden State”, but when it comes to their sports teams, their legendary tenacity is more analogous to the steel and iron of the mighty warriors of Westeros. Just like the houses that make up the world of Game of Thrones, Cali sports clubs have a rich and epic history. Read more to see how each team compares to George R.R. Martin’s legendary factions.

House Lannister – LA Lakers

You can’t keep House Lannister down, and you can’t keep the LA Lakers down. Despite a disappointing season and an early post-season defeat, the LA Lakers have never been known take losing lightly. After all, a Lannister always pays his debts. You can be sure that this dynasty will be back next year with a vengeance and take what they feel they were destined to do – rule.

House Targaryens – Anaheim Ducks

Once upon a time, the Anaheim Ducks had a stellar reputation in the National Hockey League. Like House Targaryen, though, they had to admit loss to more powerful teams. After winning the Stanley Cup in the 2006-2007 NHL season, the Anaheim Ducks lost something special that made them winners. Much like House Targaryen, they began to lose hold of their power and disappeared from many NHL fans’ radars.

In the present, the Ducks struggle to stay afloat. They’re a fractured group of players that could come together with the right leadership and training. Like the Targaryens, though, they have lost their way and don’t know how to regain control. Ducks fans still keep the faith. You can be sure that once the Ducks find their “mother of dragons,” the league will be forced to reckon with the flames of the past.

House Stark – San Francisco Giants

When you need a strong group of fighters from the North, you can always turn to the San Francisco Giants, just as you can always turn to House Stark. Like the House of Stark, every key player on the Giants team has earned his place through sacrifice and devotion.

It is a group of warriors that no one can tear apart. They uphold old traditions and rules regardless of how the sport tries to change around them. If you need a trustworthy team by your side, you can also trust the Giants.

House Tyrell – Los Angeles Kings

The Los Angeles Kings is an NHL team that resides in the most heavily populated area of California. This makes them similar to House Tyrell, which reigns the most populous part of the Seven Kingdoms. Maintaining this position has not been an easily achieved goal. Anyone lucky enough to have Los Angeles Kings tickets during the 2011-2012 season would have seen the team on its way to winning the Stanley Cup.

The future of the Kings is uncertain, just as the power of any group is uncertain while it stands atop its accomplishments. With any luck, it will remain in control of the trophy just as House Tyrell has maintained some control over the Seven Kingdoms.

What relationships do you see between California sports teams and the major houses of Game of Thrones? Which way do you hope the power will turn as next year’s season progresses?
