Comic Book Preview 5/22/13: Pill Poppin’ Squishy

Gather ’round, children. You all know what time it is, don’t you?

…You don’t?

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

Well, this is awkward. It’s a Monday, you see. Every Monday for the last solar cycle the darling David Brooke and the gruff Brendan Harvey have been sharing with the Internet the upcoming releases of the comic industry. They chose out their favorite covers and some honorable mentions, as well as a few that look downright peculiar.

They discuss. they jape. Overall it seems like a rather fun time.

I can’t believe you’ve never heard of it before…

WTF? Category

Where we don’t understand, are insulted by or would rather stab our eyes with acid pops than look at these covers for various reasons.

Miniature Jesus #2 (of 5)

Comic Book Preview 5/22/13: Pill Poppin' Squishy

Ted McKeever

Dave: The man behind last year’s mindfuck series Mondo is back, complete with freaky cover to make you ask the question, “how the hell does this have anything to do with Jesus?” This is nightmare fuel folks, and it’s gloriously disturbing.

Brendan: Well obviously Jesus is that dude getting his arm ripped off by the crab nightmare. Or maybe he’s the hooded dude escaping from the cloaked mouth monster. Either way, this cover is going to leave me sleeping with the lights on.

Flash #20

Comic Book Preview 5/22/13: Pill Poppin' Squishy

Francis Manapul

Brendan: Now, I normally adore Francis Manapul and his overall style. However, I feel that this cover in particular is not his best work. While I appreciate his attempt to leave his comfort zone and the concept of a blurry flash-fight makes sense, overall this cover ends up looking messy and hard to read.

Dave: This is the comic equivalent of 90% of the action scenes we get out of Hollywood these days. You know there’s action scene going on, but you have no idea beyond the blur and loud noises.

Batman: Lil Gotham #2

Comic Book Preview 5/22/13: Pill Poppin' Squishy

Dustin Nguyen

Brendan: This week is full of my heroes shattering my dreams. Dustin Nguyen is probably my favorite artist of all time but sadly I feel this is another cover that falls short. Someone over at DC took a drink of Alex Ross’ kool-aid because every other cover this week is filled with blurry, neon-heavy artwork and Dustin didn’t escape either.

Normally when I’ve seen Mr. Nguyen partake in such a color palette he defines it with strong outlines that help clarify the characters. Without those definitions, I find myself cringing to study the cover as the blurry brights attack my retinae.

Dave: Fact: if you eat 500 DC comics your diarrhea looks like this.

Dave’s Honorable Mentions

Journey Into Mystery #652

Comic Book Preview 5/22/13: Pill Poppin' Squishy

Jeff Dekal

Dave: Dekal once again nails our heroine and does something rarely seen; namely, he made Beta Ray Bill look freakish and scary. In most cases his horse head looks normal-ish in a superhero kind of way, but here he’s very alien looking and frightening. Good show chap.

Brendan: I agree that in 80% of his appearances BRB looks like a normal dude who happens to have a horse face. While he isn’t necessarily far away from that personage on this cover, Dekal did round his features for a more alien effect. Sif looks badass and the fabrics almost look real.

Young Avengers #5

Comic Book Preview 5/22/13: Pill Poppin' Squishy

Jamie McKelvie

Dave: The truth that less is more is on full display here and I love it. The series has had a bit of the weird going on, which makes the white/invisible attackers all the more accurate to the series. On top of that it looks cool to work out what’s going on.

Brendan: I don’t read Young Avengers, so my assumption for this cover was the the negative people was less of a style choice and more of a “we won’t just reveal who their fighting yet” censoring, like when they were announcing the original New Avengers line up and all we had to work off of were silhouettes.

If this is a true design choice I love it. The use of negative space is quite genius and I love the color-coding of our heroes.

Brendan’s Honorable Mentions

Lobster Johnson: Satan Smells A Rat

Comic Book Preview 5/22/13: Pill Poppin' Squishy

Kevin Nowlan

Brendan: There is a fantastic contrast at work in this cover. The gritty details of the top half leave you with a general unease, yet the bottom half only reveals the true focus point. I also enjoy Lobster’s grumpy, blank expression. It lets you know that while he may not know exactly what he’s stepping over, he has a decent idea.

Dave: Love the use of rings to show he’s being bisected by water. The swimming rat is a nice touch too which adds a bit of movement to an otherwise still image.

Half Past Danger #1

Comic Book Preview 5/22/13: Pill Poppin' Squishy

Stephen Mooney

Brendan: Stephen Mooney nails the adventure film poster motif. On first glance it all seems rather simple, yet on further inspection you begin no notice the minute details and smaller drawings. For a #1, this cover is packed with everything needed to intrigue. You have Nazis, ninjas, dinosaurs, dames, tanks and planes. It all looks so interesting!

Dave: Mooney is a little boy in a comic artist’s body! Dinos, ninjas and tanks oh my! I think the best thing on this cover however is the purple blouse our lady is wearing. Cool design on the sleeves and draped in a realistic way.

Brendan’s Cover of the Week

Red Sonja #75

Comic Book Preview 5/22/13: Pill Poppin' Squishy

Erik Jones

Brendan: In truth, I am in love with the captured motion in this cover. The way that this snapshot perfectly portrays Sonja’s descent into battle is true inspiring. The dark, grimey colors give the battle a morbid realness and the way Mr. Jones has crafted a delicate, yet badass, yet still quite bangin’ Sonja is a testament to his artistic ability.

Dave: Please Brendan, we all know why you really picked this. The sexy thigh/buttocks area is spot on! The color work highlights the squishy in all the right ways. Oh yeah, that demonic horse is far out too.

Dave’s Cover of the Week

X-Men Legacy #11

Comic Book Preview 5/22/13: Pill Poppin' Squishy

Mike Del Mundo

Dave: Mundo does it again and with yet another great cover on this series I’m starting to think it should be a common practice to have one cover artist on a series. He’s been able to tell a story on the covers alone, but they all go together as well. This is another cool concept that is in the same vein as last issue, only we’ve moved away from the medicine commercial and straight to the death pills!

Brendan: Dammit Mundo, stop being so awesome. It isn’t fair for the other potential top picks! I fully agree with Dave’s “one artist per comic” cover idea. The only catch is that they all have to be as original and creative as Mundo which may be a hard thing to find.
