Comic Book Preview: 6/5/13 – Escher Hands and Tentacle ❤

Good lord almighty, it’s June already. While some of the more socially inclined will be skipping work Wednesday and heading beach-side we shall be tucked safely inside, eagerly absorbing this week’s comic book offerings. What better way to prepare for that day of humps than a quick lookie-loo at what will be coming out this week, as well as what covers look dope and what covers look NOPE. (see what I did there?)

Also, if you want to read comics on the beach, more power to you. Live your life, man.

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

WTF? Category

Where we don’t understand, are insulted by or would rather stab our eyes with acid pops than look at these covers for various reasons.

Trinity of Sin: The Phantom Stranger #9

Comic Book Preview: 6/5/13 - Escher Hands and Tentacle ❤

Jae Lee

Dave: Jae Lee has a very unique style that typically wows me, but did he copy/paste this monstrosity together at the last minute? I’m more than certain this is supposed to be disturbing, but it looks so slapped together I can’t take it seriously.

Brendan: Jae Lee’s jarring style gets a bit too wonky for my taste when he starts to play with angles and proportions. That being said, this is a very original cover that almost forces a second look. I think it rides right on the line between weird and gorgeous.

Dejah Thoris and the Green Men of Mars #4

Comic Book Preview: 6/5/13 - Escher Hands and Tentacle ❤

Jay Anacleto

Dave: How small can the nipple stickies get before we are looking at nipples? What constitutes these as stickies and NOT nipples? They’re as small as nipples, but they’re black, so maybe it’s the color that constitutes nudity? Either way, it looks like smut, so everybody wins!

Brendan: I mean, how small are her nipples DRAWN? What kind of proportions can leave so little to the imagination while attempting to pass as anatomically correct? Also, why are we over analyzing the smut cover of a comic book? Remember when we had dreams, David? Remember when we were going to go somewhere?

Russ: What you guys are looking at is the censored version of the Dejah Thoris and the Green Men of Mars #4 cover, considering Dejah’s nipple discs are gold in color and also a little larger in circumference. Uh… not that I’d know off the top of my head or anything.

Batwing #21

Comic Book Preview: 6/5/13 - Escher Hands and Tentacle ❤

Ken Lashley

Dave: Batwing, stop trying to be Black Panther and go back to being a bat you sillyface. Also, Lion, get a more normal looking bottom row of teeth!

Brendan:Firstly, that is a gigantic lion. I’m not sure if that’s written into the script, but that thing is so big it’s simply terrifying. It would be funny if this were actually a forced perspective piece and Batwing & Mr. Lion happened to be nowhere near each other.

Brendan’s Honorable Mentions

Rachel Rising #17

Comic Book Preview: 6/5/13 - Escher Hands and Tentacle ❤

Terry Moore

Brendan: Everyone get ready. Here comes Dave with the tentacle rape references.

But seriously this comic is groovy. Sometimes you have an artist pick the exact right color, and I’m going to say Mr. Moore did so with that deep purple. This cover also has a lot of subtle detailing that could keep you interested for a while.

Dave: But that’s exactly what Brendan wants me to do! No, in fact I think it’s a cool cover. It’s not everyday a tentacle monster falls in love. It’s not rape if she wants it!

Planet of the Apes: Cataclysm #10

Comic Book Preview: 6/5/13 - Escher Hands and Tentacle ❤

Garry Brown

Brendan: This cover boasts that sweet vintage movie poster vibe that seems to be sweeping the comic covers nowadays. I think our damsel is drop-dead gorgeous and the coloring really helps separate the good from the bad.

One thing, people who actually read this comic: Can you actually tell the apes apart? Do those profile shots represent actual characters to you or are they all just damn, dirty apes?

Dave: Kind of a neat triangular thing going on with the ape heads and background. I’m confused on what Brown is going for as far as the female woman. She looks confused, but then her compatriots look to be on some kind of escape mission.

Dave’s Honorable Mentions

All-New X-Men #12 (variant)

Comic Book Preview: 6/5/13 - Escher Hands and Tentacle ❤

Leinil Francis Yu

Dave: Wolverine hasn’t been a Jean fanatic in awhile, or at least Marvel has toned it down. This cover exemplifies why it’s important to his character. Jean is the only character Wolverine has undying love for, an irrational love, and I see it all over their faces here. Good stuff.

Brendan: This cover perfectly conveys the very essence of the Logan/Jean relationship. He is a man defeated by love and she is going to do nothing but hurt him. I personally think the facial expressions are a bit too intense, but the overall message comes through strong.

X-Factor #257

Comic Book Preview: 6/5/13 - Escher Hands and Tentacle ❤

David Yardin

Dave: Gotta love the design and detail Yardin gave the face on this demonized Multiple Man. I wish there was more to the cover though, like a background, titles and less of a focus on the boring costume of the character. Still, very good work.

Brendan: It is an excellent character sketch, but like DAAAAAAAAAVE said, I wish there was more to love. It’s a shame the Monstrous Multiple Man doesn’t have more wear-n-tear to his costume. It was incredibly kind of the bowels of hell to custom-tailor that outfit to his new form.

Brendan’s Cover of the Week

Polarity #3

Comic Book Preview: 6/5/13 - Escher Hands and Tentacle ❤

Frazer Irving

Brendan: I know we’ve all seen this concept one thousand times, but I think the duality depicted on this version really sells the concept. I love the well-done and neatened sketches of the top half in comparison to the harsh, messy sketchings below. The hot pink is an excellent dash of color that helps bring the cover to life.

Dave: Interesting concept playing on the famous M.C. Escher Drawing Hands work.

Comic Book Preview: 6/5/13 - Escher Hands and Tentacle ❤

The noise of all the doodles helps make it look less official and more of an accidental drawing which helps convey our hero’s loss of control.

Dave’s Cover of the Week

Winter Soldier (2012) #19

Comic Book Preview: 6/5/13 - Escher Hands and Tentacle ❤

Declan Shalvey

Dave: Ka-blooey! Always fun to see titles getting involved with the concept of a cover, but my favorite aspect of this cover is the color work. The debris is made much more dangerous looking with all the red and yellows.

Brendan: I love the white hots that make up our explosion. The idea to almost entirely mute Bucky was also an excellent call, as it draws attention while equally showcasing the awesome action of the background.
