Is It Good? Edgar Allan Poe’s The Fall of the House of Usher #2 Review

Richard Corben is back to lay down some Poe on us. Edgar Allan, that is. And so we venture back into giant nose, eye, and boob land. I ask you, fellow feverish fiends, do you want to shamble with me to discover if it’s good?

This comic has a very Tales From the Crypt, or Creepy vibe going on. We see Mag the Hag again, and old woman who acts as narrator, at the beginning and end of the comic. As stated in my first review of issue 1, we get a mix of The Fall of the House of Usher, and Poe’s tale The Oval Portrait. Issue #2 adds a nod to The Cask of Amontillado.

The art is still as distinctive and iconic as always. Yes, giant noses, giant breasts. Large eyes. It’s like everybody has Marfan’s syndrome.

However, it’s still really fun to take in through your sight balls. Slightly hokey, it has the feel of one of those classic Edgar Allan Poe adaptations American International Pictures made starring Vincent Price. I always get the warm-fuzzies when reading Corben comics. He’s a throwback to the days of weird narrator characters at the beginning of anthology horror comics. And it’s always excellent to see more horror anthology type comics coming out. Still, it comes and goes too soon.

  • Very atmospheric art, and writing style.
  • Lots of influence from Poe’s other stories.
  • Over too soon.

Is It Good?

I wish I liked it more, but the momentum created in the first issue seems to come to ahead, and fizzle out by the end of the comic. It’s worth a read, but it doesn’t leave much of a lasting impression. While it’s always nice to see Edgar Allan Poe adaptations, it would be nice to get some that aren’t here and gone so quickly.
