Comic Book Preview: 7/31/13 – Highlighters and Boob Tats

Comic Book Preview, where we scope out the future releases and pick out the best and worst cover art. Not because we can, but because…well, we got nothin’ better to do.

WTF? Category

Where we don’t understand, are insulted by or would rather stab our eyes with acid pops than look at these covers for various reasons.

Grimm Fairy Tales – Werewolves: Hunger #3

Comic Book Preview: 7/31/13 - Highlighters and Boob Tats

Alfredo Reyes

Dave: Just our luck; the bubbles kick on when we’re ogling these ladies.

Brendan: What clever and unique obscurations! I’d like to think that this cover had almost gone to print before someone stopped and said “Waitaminute, Joe, you can see all of the ladies’ hooches! Get some goddamn bubbles in there or it’ll be your ass!”

Tarot Witch of the Black Rose #81

Comic Book Preview: 7/31/13 - Highlighters and Boob Tats

Jim Balent

Dave: When you’re a comic book artist you have to spend time thinking about how to draw costumes. In many cases it’s a matter of a couple lines here or there since the costumes are skin tight. This…what the hell is this?

Brendan: I mean, isn’t this a porn comic? Like a legit porn comic? Be happy they have any clothing on at all!

Grimm Universe #5

Comic Book Preview: 7/31/13 - Highlighters and Boob Tats

Mike Capprotti

Dave: I must say that while I do love the occasional piece of referential art, this one just irks me. Isn’t there something a bit pompous about likening your cover (and series) to The Creation of Adam?

Brendan: Plus, where the dongs at? Am I right?!

Dave’s Honorable Mentions

Amala’s Blade #4

Comic Book Preview: 7/31/13 - Highlighters and Boob Tats

Michael Dialynas

Dave: Sadly it’s the end of this miniseries, but thankfully it goes out on an awesome cover. The armor and the texture to all the different pieces is pretty to look at, the layers from top to bottom keep your eyes moving and all the expressions spell out one thing. War is hell and here we go.

Brendan: The textures and colors are top notch. This is one of those covers that could keep you interested for hours whilst you decipher every detail.

Venom #38

Comic Book Preview: 7/31/13 - Highlighters and Boob Tats

Declan Shelvey

Dave: Cut a cover into fourths and you had me at cut. The transition from Venom, to the lens, to the photographer is an interesting bit of storytelling that requires only a bit of work for the viewer to get it. Venom also looks particularly spidery here.

Brendan: I love the composition of this cover. I also enjoy the simple color scheme that helps separate our characters. I also like how Venom has a bit of a Spider-Man vibe to him. Not in the “yeah it’s just another Spider-Man clone” sense, but in the sense that Venom has finally become a heroic icon much like his predecessor.

Brendan’s Honorable Mentions

Trinity of Sin Pandora #2

Comic Book Preview: 7/31/13 - Highlighters and Boob Tats

Ryan Sook

Brendan: Sook-y it to me! I’m… I’m so sorry. The warped images within the cape are very well done. I’m also in love with the general color scheme of reds and warm purples. It gives the cover a tangible life force.

Dave: Pandora has some sick blades right there which give her a hard, edgy look. That helps offset the dream like shadows coming from the cloak. Nice work.

Collider #1

Comic Book Preview: 7/31/13 - Highlighters and Boob Tats

Nathan Fox

Brendan: The colors, Duke! The colors! The fuchsia mixed with the reds, yellows and whites is remarkably jarring. I love the motion blur connected to his eye lights. If this cover does one thing, it grabs your attention.

Dave: Stop sweating Collider, you’re drunk! That’s a bit of ingenuity with the highlighter coming out of the eyes onto the pink background to create movement.

Batman Incorporated #13

Comic Book Preview: 7/31/13 - Highlighters and Boob Tats

Chris Burnham

Brendan: Bat-ception! Honestly I just think this is a cute concept that I haven’t seen recently enough to find it enjoyable.

Dave: The perspective is rather interesting I must say. We can see his chin straight on but the top of his belt buckle at the same time, which means he’s puffing his chest out? Okay, okay, I know I shouldn’t be focusing on those things, but they irk me a bit. The concept behind this cover is cute and surprisingly fresh. You’d think it would have been done before.

Dave’s Pick

Fearless Defenders #7

Comic Book Preview: 7/31/13 - Highlighters and Boob Tats

Mark Brooks

Dave: Brooks is a rascal, largely because the man knows how to capture our interest. This cover has nothing to do with the story within, unless you count the bit of detailed background at the top, but drags your eyes into his idea and he makes you love it. I particularly love Moonstar’s “what are you looking at” expression.

Brendan: I think I’m ready to get off the “unique and interesting Defenders cover” bus. While I loved the previous iterations I have to say that this one feels like a “what else can we do?”. Don’t get me wrong, it is incredibly well done, but these “out of the box” concepts have finally become a bit tiresome.

Brendan’s Pick

Judge Dredd Year One #4

Comic Book Preview: 7/31/13 - Highlighters and Boob Tats

Greg Staples

Brendan: This is one of those covers that perfectly encapsulates the essence of a character. The entire city burns and Dredd will stand by and watch if it’s the right thing to do. The bruise-like colors that make up that strong jaw are perfect.

Dave: I think Dredd got some kind of STD on his face, ’cause the green and reds don’t look so healthy. Oh well, Mega-City One is burning anyhow. Time for some HPV-covered marshmallows!
