Night of the Living Dead Aftermath #10

Comic Book Preview: 8/14/13 - Strength and Tentacles

Matt Busch

Dave: God knows when I’m viewing some sexy decapitated heads I wanna see some vag covered by panties.

Brendan: Again we find ourselves with a cover that crosses sex and gore. Can the two not be mutually exclusive? Is someone popping wood over this?

Batgirl #23

Comic Book Preview: 8/14/13 - Strength and Tentacles

Alex Garner

Dave: You know when it’s purple Dave will love it! But then again…okay this cover is rendered very nicely, but what the F is going on? Did she fall down and get wrapped up in police tape on the crime scene? This is ludicrous! Dramatic yes, questionable yes…unless it’s a police tape monster that is.

Brendan: I think there is some symbolism regarding her father and his police work causing stress and restriction on Barbara’s late night adventure-work. To be fair, this piece is fairly beautiful. There is a ton of drama with the coiling police tape and that Gordon portrait is just haunting.

Superboy #23

Comic Book Preview: 8/14/13 - Strength and Tentacles

Ken Lashley

Dave: Tentacley good! Reminds me of this:

Brendan: I mean… I guess Supe’s looks slightly Asian.

Dave’s Honorable Mention

Aphrodite IX #4

Comic Book Preview: 8/14/13 - Strength and Tentacles

Stjepan Sejic

Dave: Sejic is one of my favorite cover artist these days, partly because there’s nothing else quite like his digital work. It’s also because the man can make you gasp in so many ways. This cover is yet another, as the arm and body of this huge dude is so eye catching you’ll barely notice little old Aphrodite is a tiny thing in comparison. What a strong dame, eh?

Brendan: The contrast of the massive man to his tiny adversary is truly impressive. I love how you would almost miss Aphrodite completely if it weren’t for the signature pop of her green hair. The detailing for the cybernetic plating is mesmerizing.

Brendan’s Honorable Mention

Astonishing X-Men #65

Comic Book Preview: 8/14/13 - Strength and Tentacles

Phil Noto

Brendan: I am simply in love with the angelic ice-wings Mr. Iceman have given himself. The angel wings cloaked behind himself and the for-reals God Thor is incredibly fitting. I also enjoy the muted-blue filter that causes everything to look so damned cold.

Dave: It definitely looks chilly and I do love how that hammer looks encased in ice. Am I crazy to be thinking, “how do ice wings work?”

Dave’s Pick

Six-Gun Gorilla #3

Comic Book Preview: 8/14/13 - Strength and Tentacles

Ramon K. Perez

Dave: The contrast of bottom right and top left is eye catching and at first glance seems to be a design choice. Then you realize there’s blood marking up the blue area and then you realize that’s a reflection. Say whaaaaaa? Nice to know they care so much while rabid desert mutants hurt our hero.

Brendan: So far, every Six-Gun Gorilla cover has impressed me. The way the characters are drawn and the style behind each cover makes you just want to pick this comic up and flip through the pages. It succeeds on every level.

Brendan’s Pick

Batman Arkham Unhinged #17

Comic Book Preview: 8/14/13 - Strength and Tentacles

Christopher Mitten

Brendan: Now, I love a lot about this cover. I love the grey, indistinguishable masses crowding our heroes. I love the warm, almost unsettling oranges that fade into cold blues. What I love most, though, is the contrast between Gordon and Batman. It is fitting that Gordon, the real authority, would look so small and desperate with his megaphone while Bats, who thrives through his symbol, is this hulking shadow that in all honesty doesn’t look like something I would fuck with.

Dave: There sure are a lot of ways to draw Batman, but the beady eyed monster in the darkness is one of my favorites.
