Comic Book Preview: 8/21/12 – Bullet Shine and CGI Sexy

Instead of checking each publisher’s website to see what’s coming out this Wednesday, why not check out our nice Comic Book Preview? This is where we compile that info in one place and pick our favorite cover art before anybody else on the web. Happy reading!

WTF? Category

Where we don’t understand, are insulted by or would rather stab our eyes with acid pops than look at these covers for various reasons.

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

KISS Kids #1

Comic Book Preview: 8/21/12 - Bullet Shine and CGI Sexy

Jose Holder

Brendan: Because, obviously this is what the world needs: A goofy, cartoon version of the 1970s Rock Band that was famous for facepaint and mass adultery (I can’t confirm the adultery, but I think it’s common lore that those dudes banged a lot of women). The entire concept of a KISS comic book still completely baffles me, even more so when it looks as if it is indoctrination material for the 13-and-under crowd.

Beyond that, those characters look fucking creepy! I’m not sure if I’m more put off by the red-eyed death stare of the cat’s wobbly cheshire eyes. That shit will give you nightmares.

Dave: That’s not makeup, those are tattoos and these aren’t kids, they’re 40-year-old meth heads looking for a trick or two. God, what a sick marketing ploy.

Aphrodite IX #4

Comic Book Preview: 8/21/12 - Bullet Shine and CGI Sexy

David Finch

Brendan: Hashtag underbutt! Is that an actual hashtag? I just checked. It is. Aaaanyway.

Let’s have a moment of real talk, friends. No matter the sex appeal of such an outfit, isn’t this really just like the reverse of a plumber’s crack? Wouldn’t the constant draft hitting your nethers leave you goose-pimpled? Anyone out there actually put one of these skirt-belts on? I haven’t since college.

Dave: Let’s just admit the vag-bump is visible from this angle and I’m not okay with that. That is one big pair of labia.

Sonic Universe #55 (Sega Variant Cover)

Comic Book Preview: 8/21/12 - Bullet Shine and CGI Sexy

Sega

Dave: Mmm, yummy sexy Sonic cat rendered in poorly constructed CGI turns me on so good. Oh wait, sorry, I forgot that’s the opposite of sexy. Who the hell made this and thought, “this’ll bring the kids in, watch out J. Scott Campbell!”

Brendan: Are we going for sexy? Was there a memo? I think they were probably trying for “badass” and Dave just took it to a weird place. For me I didn’t even really notice this cover. It was just another generic Sonic “oh we probably need a cover” image that was rushed through.

Dinosaurs Attack! #2

Comic Book Preview: 8/21/12 - Bullet Shine and CGI Sexy

Earl Norem

Dave: In all honesty, I really love this cover and how insane it is. From the accordion spinal cord stretch to the pterodactyl taking some sort of sexual satisfaction from killing the first lady, this is one fucked up scene. All painted in semi-realistic fashion, no less! This is one painting Trimpe probably kept covered in the studio. Don’t want any insane asylum folks over for dinner or anything.

Brendan: Man, I never knew Dinosaurs could be so vicious! Look at how much he’s enjoying himself! That’s gotta be some tasty human. Also, I enjoy the still-intact esophagus of that business man with the AK. Sure, the rest of his flesh gave way quickly, but that throat muscle is pure steel, baby.

Dave’s Honorable Mentions

Strain: The Fall #2

Comic Book Preview: 8/21/12 - Bullet Shine and CGI Sexy

E. M. Gist

Dave: Having read the books, I have to say the comic book iteration of Mr. Quinlan (on the right) is truly frightening. I always pictured him kinda normal looking, but dang does he need some plastic surgery. The liquid oozing from our dead vampire is also quite disturbing. The vampires in this series aren’t sexy in the slightest, but more like parasitic predators.

Brendan: I do enjoy the lighting and composition of our characters. The way the white pool of… stuff spreads into and fills the bottom right area makes great use of the page. Things are a bit dark for my taste but then again, hey, vampires amirite?

Brendan’s Honorable Mentions

Nova #7

Comic Book Preview: 8/21/12 - Bullet Shine and CGI Sexy

Ed McGuinness

Brendan: This one is all about these colors, folks. I think that the scale of blue-to white really works here because it’s so unlike the normal palette for these two heroes. Spidey is obviously more of a summer colors guy and Nova is almost always surrounded by fiery explosion. I understand the use of a flat black backdrop to enhance the figures, but if you’ve been reading this weekly article for a while (people do read this, right?) you know I’m one to prefer some excitement beyond the characters.

Dave: How Spidey could go toe to toe with Nova is beyond me, but I’m glad they shared their blue flame ball of love with us.

Chin Music #2

Comic Book Preview: 8/21/12 - Bullet Shine and CGI Sexy

Tony Harris

Brendan: While it is teetering on the edge of being a bit too messy, I think the hail of bullets and fire really allows for an appreciation of the action taking place. I love the flow of bullets from the gun to the foreground and I think that the one-eyed demon is pretty fucking badass. That plus the simple details in the wood grain and building side really prove that Harris knows what he is doing.

Dave: I always knew I was in the wrong trade. Obviously bullet shiner is an occupation in high demand. I mean, just look at all the bullets I could be shining!

Brendan’s Pick

Supergirl #23

Comic Book Preview: 8/21/12 - Bullet Shine and CGI Sexy

Mahmud A. Asrar

Brendan: Let’s all just have a quiet moment to take this in. Now, what I love about this cover is that it takes one of the classic “superheroes fighting” poses and chisels it into perfection. The proportions are spectacular and the framing is fantastic. I love how they stretch out (Literally, in Superboy’s arm’s case) to fill the entire page. That, plus the way the dynamic angling compliments the background (look at how the two individual capes merge together to fill out the arrow shape) is pure genius. The background is simple upon first glance but when you begin to study the dark shades you realize there is an entire facility waiting within the shadows. Everything is just perfectly executed.

Dave: I do love me that robot arm of his. It’s fun to look at, but in a strange way looks functional. I also dig how Asrar has made Supergirl’s hair a single, filled-in color. That makes her pop a bit nicely.

Dave’s Pick

Red Sonja #80

Comic Book Preview: 8/21/12 - Bullet Shine and CGI Sexy

Lucio Parrillo

Dave: I want this in movie form. Now! How flipping cool is this scene? I particularly like how dark Parrillo has made this as it forces you to lean in and take it all in. The purple smoking sword, the shiny muscles and Sonja flesh all add up to an epic cover. I particularly like how the sun is shining through those demon wings.

Brendan: I do enjoy the concept of a fearless Sonja jumping off of/out of something and going for a mid-air battle. While the coloring is pretty fantastic, I can’t help but feel that everything is just too dark. I would love to see additional detail on our monsters and our heroine.

Dave: And look how plump and delicious those demons look too! Bite sized feasts!

Brendan: Calm down, creep.
