As I took a second to look back on all of the issues of Uncanny X-Men leading up to this one and the stories they tell I realize something: this series is indescribable.

Think about it: there’s no continuing story, no arc lasts more than a couple issues and the whole thing is just a random roller-coaster ride. That’s not to say it hasn’t been a fun one. This issue is the last before Battle of the Atom and the finale of a short arc, is it good?

Uncanny X-Men #11 (Marvel Comics)

Any X-Fan has seen a million Sentinel battles and knows the basic routine: A Sentinel attacks the X-Men and everyone goes crazy because this Sentinel is so much more advanced than any one they have ever seen. It goes down the same way nearly every time. So what makes this Sentinel battle any different from any other in X-Men history?

Well, for a start, it’s from Scott Summer’s point of view. Scott is usually hated for being too much of a “boyscout” or a “goody two-shoes” but he is actually quite interesting in this scene. His monologue is like him talking about his graduating class. He takes brief turns talking about each student and their powers as they in turn attack the Sentinel.

On the side we have a pretty boring Mystique sub-plot that doesn’t really seem to go anywhere. That’s OK because the main story, the fight scene, is strong enough to be the main story of the issue.

8.5

  • Awesome action sequence
  • Great monologue
  • Weak art

The art is not my thing. I really don’t like Frazer Irving and thought he didn’t carry the story well. Brian Michael Bendis is a very talented writer however and makes up for Irving’s shortcomings with his intriguing dialogue and great storytelling.

Is It Good?

Yeah. It’s a solid fight-based issue. I’m definitely looking forward to Battle of the Atom.

I miss the days of the X-Men cartoon when Nimrod, the Sentinel of the future, was the ultimate “too advanced for them to take on” Sentinel. ::nostalgic sigh::
