Comic Book Preview: 10/9/13 – Women Reign Supreme

We present here, for both beginner and more advanced students of comic books, the 78th complete Comic Preview. Each iteration of this column is the product of two hours of labor, and is intended to be as faithful to the genre as possible, in both its criticism and unbiased selections, as the English language permits.

We foresee this work as being useful to anyone who respects the impeccable art that so often graces comic book covers and to those who want a sneak peek at what will be appearing on the shelves. Beginning students may now gain a more balanced view of the art of the comic book cover. Let’s take a look, shall we?

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

WTF? Category

Where we don’t understand, are insulted by or would rather stab our eyes with acid pops than look at these covers for various reasons.

Judge Dredd #11

Comic Book Preview: 10/9/13 – Women Reign Supreme
Nelson Daniel

Brendan: Can anyone take this cover seriously with that screaming can of tomato soup in the top left corner? I get that Dredd has a bit of a symmetrical look to him, but that is outright nonsense. Hey, everything else looks nice, though.

Dave: It’s a trap!

Cryptozoic Man #1

Comic Book Preview: 10/9/13 – Women Reign Supreme
Walt Flanagan

Dave: Insane covers like this are fine and good. They’re conveying all the horrors and nutso stuff you’re getting yourself into. I just don’t like how they seem prerendered and Photoshopped into this scene. On top of that, there’s some odd spacing on the right side that throws me off. This cover tells me nothing beyond, “bat shit crazy” which, I guess, could be the point.

Brendan: The layout does seem a bit one-sided. Perhaps there is some story-based reasoning behind that decision. I liken this cover to one of the fun, crazy pieces that graced the covers of DC’s Dial H, only this version seems a bit more slapdash. You could see this cover being a fleshed out version of a random sketch page. All these characters seem unique, so much so that they don’t really seem to go together.

Dave’s Honorable Mentions

Avengers Arena #16

Comic Book Preview: 10/9/13 – Women Reign Supreme

Francesco Francavilla

Dave: This is nearly pick of the week, but the gun and is sort of floating there and looks odd. That said, what a cool concept. If only they could have made the comic the shape of that gun. Francavilla has been owning lately (Breaking Bad posters, anyone?), and what he’s got here is one killer B-movie poster to look at.

Brendan: I do enjoy the gun silhouette that draws us into the real action. Like Dave mentioned, it is rather blank outside of that gun. Bonus points for the simple, intriguing text boxes.

Brendan’s Honorable Mentions

Superman/Wonder Woman #1

Comic Book Preview: 10/9/13 – Women Reign Supreme

Aaron Kuder

Brendan: Dayum, gurl, you lookin’ FOINE. Outside of Wondie’s bangin’ frame I love the choice of colors. The Grecian orange and blacks make for fantastic stuff on our urn as well as Supe’s simple color scheme. It’s really nice how the color choices allow our sullen Wonder Woman to have a bit of pop.

Dave: Note the pieces of vase that are shattering away behind Superman. Does this mean the heroes came out of this vase? I think I’m getting the allusion being made here: Wonder Woman is breaking away from her Greek roots into a new age of superheroes, but it doesn’t seem obvious enough for me. That said, I dig the call-to-action vibe I’m getting from Superman and Wonder Woman’s reluctance.

Brendan’s Cover of the Week

Trillium #1 (2nd printing)

Comic Book Preview: 10/9/13 – Women Reign Supreme

Jeff Lemire

Brendan: It may be cheating to choose a 2nd printing cover (is that even true? Do we even have rules?) but goddamn I love this cover. That endless field of flowers must have taken some serious work and I commend Mr. Lemire for it! I am also in love with the planetary background and the warm, distant mountainscape that blurs in the background. It’s all simply enchanting.

Dave: “How’d you spend your Sunday?”

“Oh, you know, walking through a field of flowers on planet Triptan 9.”

The use of — I think what I see is watercolor in the space portion — is quite nice and looks particularly heavenly in relation to the much more solid looking flowers. I also like how Lemire has drawn the fishbowl helmet as a simple circle, which lends itself to more of a halo than a space suit.

Dave’s Cover of the Week

Red Sonja #4

Comic Book Preview: 10/9/13 – Women Reign Supreme

Jenny Frison

Dave: The blood whisking off that blade is almost real and I love how it curves from the bottom left all the way up to the top left. That gives us enough to the scene, seeing as the background is pretty blank, and also circles what we should really be looking at, namely Sonja herself. The hair pops wonderfully and her eyes are stone cold deadly. I also love how her belt and bikini string hang on her hip which accentuates her sexiness. All around great stuff here, folks.

Brendan: The use of the blood stream to guide our exploration of the cover is simply top-notch. I can’t say I’m really digging Sonja’s cold, dead eyes but I suppose that would be the standard look when ending a life. I also enjoy the choice of coloring. The majority of the cover uses these morbid, gloomy colors which allows you to fully appreciate the blaring reds in both the blood and Sonja’s hair.
