Everyone’s favorite fish-man is back and dealing with a world over run by Hell beasts. Is it good?
Hey. Wait a minute. I’m getting this feeling of deja vu…
Abe Sapien #7: The Shape of Things to Come Part 2 (Dark Horse Comics)
Story by Mike Mignola and Scott Allie. Yuma County, Arizona. A woman named Elena, who wants to join the B.P.R.D. Abe decides he doesn’t want to go back to the B.P.R.D. And then all Hell breaks loose, again. I’m noticing a pattern. Some great action, and the pacing is so fast that I was done before I even had a chance to process what happened.
Art, as in pencils and inks, are by Sebastian and Max Fiumara. They draw excellent monsters, and create an exquisite looking Abe. There’s also a really cool looking zombie that gets thrown into the fold. So, the art is still fantastic, ass-kicking, and totally bitchin’.
He’s wearing a suit, so he’s a classy zombie, at least.
David Stewart is so good. How many times can I rephrase the same thing? He is master of color.
- Monsters are excellent looking.
- Fiumara Abe is still jaw-dropping.
- Dave Stewart makes colors his b---h.
- Moves fast as Hell!
- I feel like I’m reading the same story over and over.
Is it Good?
It’s a cool comic, but again, absolutely nothing new is brought to the Mignola-verse. Same monsters (except the zombie), and same Abe trying to find his way. Same characters who are barely introduced die, and I still don’t feel any pain at the loss. I just met them and they didn’t make much of an impression. It’s not a bad issue, but it seems like so much that has come before. So, worth a read, but don’t expect any huge revelations. If you’re down to watch some people shoot monsters, and to see Abe kick some ass, then by all means, have at.
