Is It Good? Wolverine and the X-Men #40 Review

Jason Aaron is one manipulative sonuvabitch and he knows it. He knows that people will be reading these remaining issues of Wolverine and the X-Men on the brink of tears. He knows that people will be reminiscing over old issues. He knows that people are expecting a crazy ending, and he plays on all of that by giving us a heartwarming tale for the ages. So, although I have already answered the question: is it good?

Oh, the feels! On one side of the story we have Wolverine and Cyclops confronting each other about the schism and the death of Charles Xavier after an exhausting fight with sentinels. And over at the Jean Grey School, you have the students trying to defend their haven against the now revealed S.H.I.E.L.D agents. Both parts of the story are equally touching and beautiful.

Although the parts with the kids were heartwarming and hilarious, Logan and Scott’s talk was just comic gold. They understand they will never get along, they understand that their schools are based around totally different core values; but still they realize they are similar in that they both have blood on their hands and both care about the same people. The way Logan analyzes Scott’s behavior and compares it to his own was brilliant. Scott will not take responsibility for the murder of Charles Xavier, but still he sees (with help from Logan) that he is not a perfect person and his movement is flawed. Although they don’t make peace, the two come to an understanding and a compromised place that spells peace for the X-Universe.

Jason Aaron also managed to brilliantly tie up the thread about the S.H.I.E.L.D agents. The kids, in an attempt to save their school and themselves, send the two intruders on a bamf-ful trip through the JGS going through the repertoire of things we love about the school. The end result of the conflict is melancholy, while it’s nice to see the X-Men free of S.H.I.E.L.D it’s sad to lose such an enthusiastic and hopeful student.

Wolverine and the X-Men #40 is by orders of magnitude the best written chapter of the saga so far. With so many touching moments and enough nostalgia to choke the Watchmen, this comic delivers in all regards. The humor is poignant and clever and there is not a single line in the comic that sounds forced.

Is It Good?

Most definitely. I continue to delight in this series and it seems like because it’s ending this team has decided to amp up the awesome.
