Before we get to the second arc, Coffin Hill is taking a one-issue detour. We are going back in time to the ’50s to learn a little more about the history of the Coffin family. What does this one-shot have in store for us? Is it good?
Coffin Hill #7 (Vertigo)
It’s 1958 and we see young Ellie Coffin, future mother of Eve, as she enters the forest and seeks protection from the Coffin Witch. However, she runs afoul of her undead father, who starts hunting her down. If she’s going to survive, she’s going to need to find a way to escape him…
Perhaps this ominous looking figure could help?
This issue does not necessarily continue the story of Coffin Hill, but instead adds more backstory and history. Coffin Hill #7 is basically the story of Ellie meeting the Coffin Witch that she alluded to at the end of the last issue. As such, it’s good for what it is and how it expands more on the background of this series, learning more of the history of the witch, previous Harvests that came before, more of the lineage of the Hill family, and some extra context for the previous issues storylines. It’s very nice as a bonus story, even if it doesn’t contribute a lot to the main story considering that the Witch storyline seems to be wrapped up now.
Caitlin Kittredge’s writing this issue is pretty good overall. It’s a quick read, but the storytelling makes it very interesting concerning what we learn and what happens, even if there are no big surprises. The dialogue and narration is alright, though there are a few hiccups that stood out. The pacing and story flow are nice, but there are some awkward transitions between scenes and panels, like in the first issue. The ending is okay, but it feels like it trails off instead of reaching a resolution. There’s nothing really bad here with writing, but there are definitely some issues and nitpicks that could have been fixed with a bit more polishing.

The artwork is done by Stephen Sadowski (penciller) and Mark Farmer (inker) instead of the usual team (though we have the same colorist to keep some consistency). Their style doesn’t get nearly as creepy or horrific as what the normal artist is capable of, but they do have some moments and their artwork is fine for the most part. The characters look fine, but sometimes suffer from facial expressions that don’t match up with the scene or what the character is saying. Layouts are fine and settings/backgrounds do look good for the most part. With the usual colorist for the book, the artwork does help capture the usual tone and mood even if it isn’t as usually scary. It looks fine overall though despite my nitpicks with it.
Is It Good?
Coffin Hill #7 is a decent one shot that adds quite a bit more to the story of the last arc, making it quite enjoyable. The writing and guest artwork have a few hiccups, but the issue is still a decent read. With issue, I look forward to when the series comes back in June.
