Is It Good? Iron Patriot #3 Review

Iron Patriot #2 wasn’t quite as good as the debut issue but the third issue is here; and as always we answer the question… is it good?

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

James Rhodes is down but not completely out. This mysterious man in a power armor suit who has been behind everything saves his life, if only for Rhodes to do something for him in return. Meanwhile, Rhodes’ family is being held hostage and beaten down.

Dammit, I didn’t want to call an ambulance! Grr… this bad guy thing is harder than I thought.

It’s a little sad to see a book that started off so well start to slip even further down. This issue felt so… uneventful. Not much happens outside of the last couple of pages. The story just didn’t move forward a lot and the villain isn’t very interesting when we get some revelations about his plans.

There are other problems as well. The main family is not particularly memorable… nor do they do anything in this issue. After two strong showings they fall flat in this issue. There are some very stupid and plot convenient moments that are pretty poorly written and then there is the ending where it’s not really an ending or cliffhanger — the book just runs out of pages and decides to call it quits there. Pretty anticlimactic. The rest of the writing can be considered fine. There is some alright dialogue, the pacing isn’t too bad, and the story structure and flow are alright. However, there’s just nothing here that’s worth recommending outside of those few bits in the writing department.

The Avengers are still on that coffee break I see.

The artwork in comic remains just fine, no real dip or problem with it at all. The characters look fine for the most part outside of some odd expressions, the scenery and locations are impressive and well-depicted, the colors are nice, and the tiny bit of action is alright to look at. I would prefer some power armor fights here, but you take what you can get at this point. It’s a fine looking book, but that’s about it.

Is It Good?

Iron Patriot #3 is a very big step back for the series. I remain genuinely interested in where the comic will go, but the writing makes it hard to sit through at points. I hope this title can turn it around (as it’s still early), but the past two issues just can’t stack up to the debut.
