Is It Good? Edgar Allan Poe’s Morella and the Murders in the Rue Morgue Review

Ah, another delectably diabolical dish from Mr. Richard Corben. Mag the Hag and her enormous, pendulous breasts are back! And it’s yet again, another Poe adaptation. I wonder, as I sit before this pallid bust of a pale lady with a huge bust, if it could possibly be what is known in this dreary and bloody life as… good.

Is It Good? Edgar Allan Poe's Morella and the Murders in the Rue Morgue Review

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

This issue encompasses two Edgar Allan Poe adaptations: Morella, and The Murders in the Rue Morgue. It’s written and illustrated by Richard Corben, with colors by Corben and Beth Corben Reed, and letters by Nate Piekos of Blambot. You fly through this comic, as it has two stories shoved into one 28 page issue. And, if I’m being sincere, it goes too fast. Morella is done before you even realize what’s going on. The Murders in the Rue Morgue is the better of the two stories, since it has the most page time; the most meat, as it were. Even still, it’s only roughly twenty pages. It’s hard to really get swept up in a mystery that’s over and done in twenty pages.

The art, as hinted at, is the typical Corben style. He’s got people in pruple round sunglasses, he’s got ginormous boobs, he’s got them big noses and screechy-lookin’ faces. It’s a hoot.

However, there are benefits to such a quick pace. For one, this style always leaves you wanting more. I definitely crave another Corben adaptation after every one of his one-shots. They’re fun, they’re campy, and they move at the pace of a trucker on Provigil.

Is it good?

Yes, it’s good, but it moves faster than The Flash on Adderall. Still, it’s a wondrous little pretty, so go snag it if you like Edgar Allan Poe, and especially pick it up if you dig Richard Corben. Corben has a great style all his own (even with those huge schnozes.)
