Is It Good? Armor Hunters: Bloodshot #1 Review

Gimme a tie-in I actually like and I’ll be a happy camper, because let’s face it, most tie-ins usually suck. They’re often used to pad out the good parts of a main event and subsequently pad out the profits. So far Valiant has been producing some action packed tie-in comics that are fun, but are light on the character moments. How is this issue? Maybe it’ll make this guy a happy camper…is it good?

Is It Good? Armor Hunters: Bloodshot #1 Review

If you haven’t been following the drama of the Bloodshot storyline, you wouldn’t know that he escaped his American comrades due to some shady business by their leader. He was recently pinged in Columbia and brought back in to fight an alien threat. This issue delves into what was going on in Columbia, flashing back to these moments while Bloodshot takes on threats at a military base. Considering he’s a soldier, it’s not hard to guess there’s going to be some war nightmare situations that boil up while he fights these aliens, which helps bring the story down to a human level.

Poor doggies.

Writer Joe Harris makes Bloodshot one major badass in this issue. He takes on the dog beasts all alone, a battle that Ninjak and the Eternal Warrior needed to team up on to defeat. He also uses a lot of his nano powers which is always a plus. It’s cool and all to see him been blown to bits, but his tech side is the much less tapped aspect of this character. Harris also weaves in the X-O armored monster X-O Manowar took out a few months ago nicely. He’s mad, of course, and still screaming to be let loose, but it’s clear he’s going to be a major part of this miniseries moving forward. Take an insane monster with a semi-working X-O suit who’s been imprisoned, team him up with Bloodshot, a guy who kind of hates the people he’s protecting and imprisoned the monster, and you’ve got yourself one interesting character dynamic. There’s also an added benefit that this monster knows the aliens attacking earth. If that doesn’t scream drama, I don’t know what does.

The art is pretty exceptional too, with an illustrated look that is kinetic and interesting to look at. Artist Trevor Hairsine draws in a way that reminds me of Paul Pope, only a little less chaotic and a lot more stable. It’s the kind of pencils you could take all the color away from and it’d look just as good.

He’s not a Jedi, he can just communicate with computers. So you know, cooler.

Is It Good?

Not a bad tie-in at all, and in fact, I’ll say right now it’s the best so far. Bloodshot has felt as if he’s been shoehorned in at the last minute of this event, but now it’s clear he has a role and it’s to be one badass war machine. Bring it on!
