Is It Good? Miles Morales: The Ultimate Spider-Man #4 Review

After that last comic I reviewed involving the Ultimate Universe (and Reed Richards’ genital mutilation), you think I would have stayed away altogether. But no, I’m a forgiving man. And here to check in on Ultimate Spider-Man.

It’s been a slow moving series thus far. However, this issue promises something very big. Is it good?

Miles Morales: The Ultimate Spider-Man #4 (Marvel Comics)

Kate Bishop returns home, a crying mess after Miles revealed to her that he was Spider-Man. The poor girl is completely unsure of what to do next. Elsewhere, there’s a bigger problem going on: Miles Morales finds himself face to face with the Green Goblin… in the same neighborhood where Peter Parker was killed before. This could be end of him as well.

That looks painful.

Like I said before, this is a slow moving series (just like the last few series when I think about it) and not much really happens per issue. That sort of extends to this issue for the most part, even if it is one long fight scene. However, it’s really an epic fight scene and the fallout from it alone has really pushed the story into an interesting direction for the future. Those aspects make the issue feel a lot more substantial than previous offerings.

The rest of the writing by Brian Michael Bendis is very well done for the most part. I say for the most part, because some of the dialogue and character moments (mostly confined to Kate and her sister scene) are a bit questionable and the characters come across as being too jerk-ish. Other than that, it’s pretty good. The rest of the dialogue and narration is perfectly fine, the pacing is fast and the comic can go by in a flash, the characterization is fine, and the ending is quite strong and really makes you want to know what happens next. Also, the emotional angle and the reactions from the characters in this issue are really strong and don’t feel forced or corny.

What a lovely person you are.

The artwork by David Marquez remains very striking. Besides the amazing action scene and how well it is presented, there is so much to like with the art: the terrifically drawn characters with a great range of expressions and emotions, the overall style, the layouts, the vibrant coloring; just really some of the best artwork any of the Ultimate Spider-Man books have ever had before.

Is It Good?

Miles Morales: The Ultimate Spider-Man #4 is a really solid and action-packed issue for the series. While story progression was slow, the issue still offers so much and so much potential going forward. The writing is the strongest and the artwork is easily the best the Ultimate Universe has to offer (that’s not saying much though in hindsight). It was a great issue and I really look forward to the next one.
