Boston Comic Con 2014 Q&A: What’s Your Favorite Film of the Year and Ever?

When you go to Boston Comic Con and get a creator to sit down and chat the first thing they’re anticipating is a comic book question. So call me crazy when I wanted to ask every single one what their favorite film was of the year and…ever!

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

::Cue dramatic music::

It may seem like a simple question to ask but isn’t it curious when certain artists or writers pick something that is completely different than what you’d expect? It doesn’t help that Guardians of the Galaxy just came out and blew all the other good movies out of their minds for this year.

So let’s see what they said:

What’s your favorite film of the year?

David Peterson (Mouse Guard): Oh my god I’m so terrible at this. I’m so terrible at this because I don’t see movies anymore. I only see things on cable or HBO…oh um! Grand Budapest Hotel! You can see with the timing too quick shots back and forth sometimes there’s long holding shots, slow pans and…yeah you know he knows what he’s doing.

Simon Bisley (Lobo and Sláine): Captain America! Fuckin’ right. It was a perfect comic book translation. Direction, a lot of drama going on and fucking action. It was non stop — thrilling you know. Good entertainment.

Eric Talbot (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles): Hmm, I don’t see a lot of movies in the theater. What have I seen, what have I seen, what have I seen…

Victor DeTroy (Man vs. Rock): It would have to be Man vs. Rock the uncut edition. And then other than that I’d have to say…uhhhhh. I’m trying to think of something cool, but I can’t say the real movie I loved… okay fine, Planet of the Apes.

Sean Wang (Runners): Probably Guardians of the Galaxy.

Pat Shand (Robyn Hood): It’s incredibly hard to pick, but probably a toss-up between Winter Soldier and The Fault in Our Stars.

Ramón Pérez (Spider-Man, New Warriors): I think because I just saw it, Guardians of the Galaxy.

J (Farlaine the Goblin): Guardians of the Galaxy.

Nick Bradshaw (Wolverine and the X-Men): Guardians of the Galaxy I’d say is my favorite movie of the year.

Mark Brooks (Lots and lots of Marvel covers): So far it’s Guardians of the Galaxy; it’s just really phenomenal.

Mike Norton (Battlepug and Revival): Guardians of the Galaxy.

Plenty of support for the Guardians of the Galaxy film. And with good reason.

Ben Templesmith (30 Days of Night, Fell): Uhhh that’s hard, you say favorite movie that’s 5 stars, but favorite movie of the year, you’ll only get a couple of stars. Hmmm, Lucy. Luc Besson is my favorite writer/director.

Nick Pitarra (Manhattan Projects): Surprisngly the Tom Cruise movie Edge of Tomorrow. I liked it because it was like a video game. He started out like a noob and even the girl’s design in the beginning she’s got that big sword, and she’s on all the posters, she’s like a character in a video game. But then you find out she just played the video game longer. [interviewer points out it was a manga originally] Why would you change the name frrom All You Need is Kill!? That title makes you 150 million dollars! Versus Edge of Tomorrow, what does that mean? Who gives a shit? All You Need is Kill is badass. Best name ever.

Joey Esposito (Footprints): Guardians of the Galaxy…come on.

Esad Ribic (Thor: God of Thunder): What was the last movie I saw…well I just saw Captain America, I liked the first one more, but still really good. Godzilla, that was frustrating…some parts were good…

Monica Gallagher (Boobage, Go For the Eyes): Uhhh, Maleficent. Wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought it’d be. I was surprised.

Tim Seeley (Revival): Captain America 2.

Derek Hunter (Adventure Time): I loved Snowpiercer.

Ryan Ottley (Invincible): I loved Guardians it was awesome.

With that out of the way, let’s go deeper. Favorite Movie Ever?

Pat Shand (Robyn Hood) Easiest question ever. The Princess Bride. It’s the perfect film. Anyone who says differently is selling something.

the-princess-bride
Our buddy Pat Shand’s favorite film of all time.

David Peterson (Mouse Guard): Monty Python and the Holy Grail. I absolutely love that movie, it’s always funny, it always makes me laugh.

Simon Bisley (Lobo and Sláine): Point Break…or maybe my favorite movie would be Hell in the Pacific with Lee Marvin.

Eric Talbot (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles): Jaws.

Sean Wang (Runners): Lord of the Rings. It’s a single story, it’s kind of a cheat, but that’d be mine.

Ramón Pérez (Spider-Man, New Warriors): That’s a tough one, there’s so many genres that I like…Out of the Past with Robert Mitchum.

J (Farlaine the Goblin): Jaws.

Victor DeTroy (Man vs. Rock): I guess Debbie Does Dallas maybe…uhhh, I guess I can’t think of anything cool to say. When you’re asked this you gotta think of something cool or different…I guess She-Ra. She was badass.

she-ra-movie-poster
We, uh… don’t think there was a She-Ra movie, Victor. Well, unless you count this fan-made poster.

Nick Bradshaw (Wolverine and the X-Men): My favorite movie is Jaws. John Carpenter’s The Thing is a close second.

Mark Brooks (Lots and lots of Marvel covers): Fight Club.

Mike Norton (Battlepug and Revival): Star Wars.

Ben Templesmith (30 Days of Night, Fell): Mad Max 2 but in America it’s called Road Warrior. I don’t do favorites so it’s either that or John Carpenters The Thing. A bunch of others…Fight Club, I don’t do singular things. It changes over time. As of this moment it’s Road Warrior.

Joey Esposito (Footprints): Punch Drunk Love.

Nick Pitarra (Manhattan Projects): Unforgiven. if you haven’t seen it you’re a vagina. By far the best movie ever. If you notice in that movie he’s kinda weak the whole time, but when they kill Morgan Freeman he starts drinkin’ and he turns back into his old badass self, a badass. Which was awesome.

the-unforgiven-clint-eastwood
Sage life advice from Nick Pitarra: If you haven’t seen The Unforgiven, you’re a vagina.

Asad Ribic (Thor: God of Thunder): Probably Metropolis. Right now…tomorrow it’s different.

Monica Gallagher (Boobage, Go For the Eyes): Why would you pick just one? The Shining is one of my favorite feel good movies. I just turn it on, it’s beautiful.

Tim Seeley (Revival): Fight Club.

Derek Hunter (Adventure Time): Ummm, Shaun of the Dead.

Ryan Ottley (Invincible): I’m terrible at favorites. The movie I watch over and over is Punch Drunk Love. Great movie.
