Hinterkind continues to get better and better with each passing issue — and last issue was no exception. I am more than ever curious about where writer Ian Edginton will be taking the story. Hinterkind #11: is it good?

Plenty happens in this issue. John Hobb has managed to join forces with the Vampire Nation and help them with their plan so he doesn’t become a meal. A young Sidhe is being held captive by a pair of goblins. Then at the Sidhe Kingdom itself, Malachi has returned from his mission to discover the Queen has died.

But what about Canada? What’s their current problem?

With the end of the arc slowly approaching, we are starting to see every storyline culminate. Seriously, EVERY storyline is seen in this issue and this is both good and bad. It’s good because we are seeing progression. It’s bad because this is a very, very dense issue; to fit every story in, some subplots are glanced over without much detail on what happened. For instance, I understand why Hobb is working for the vampires, but wouldn’t it have been nice to see some build up or show how exactly that came about instead of just randomly showing them working together?

The characterization also took a bit of a hit this time around. Again, with so many storylines happening at once, there’s not much breathing room to develop the characters (besides Malachi, who in general needs a lot of development and backstory if he’s becoming a bigger player in this). It’s all about pushing the plot forward and while I’m intrigued by the plots, especially with some of the more interesting developments, I need a bit more time with fleshing out the cast.

Also, we now have another character added to mix.

The rest of Edginton’s writing is perfectly fine. Despite there being so many storylines and subplots converging, the pacing isn’t bad and the story flows pretty well. There’s still some interesting world-building happening, with some subtle hints of intriguing future storylines. The dialogue is fine and does the job. The ending itself is interesting, though personally for a bigger shock, I would have ended the issue on the Sidhe Kingdom’s story cliffhanger for bigger impact.

The artwork by Francesco Trifogli is what it is. It does the job fine enough, but doesn’t really jump out at you. Frankly, I’d like to see the cover artist (someone completely different than usual, newcomer Marguerite Sauvage) take a shot at drawing this book; it certainly would bring more life and energy to the book, especially with the stylized look she gives the characters.

Is It Good?

Hinterkind #11 is sadly a misstep in what was otherwise a pretty engaging arc. While its intentions were good by trying to touch base with all of the storylines and progress them, doing all of that at once left the issue cramped and unable to continue developing its characters. Hopefully the next issue, the finale for the arc, can turn things around.
