Avengers #36 was, to put it bluntly, a complete and utter snooze-fest filled with boring dialogue, boring characters, and somehow managing to make a potentially interesting story boring. However, let’s forget that and focus on the next issue. Maybe Hickman can kick the book in the ass enough to wake it up and start making it exciting again. Is it good?
Avengers #37 (Marvel Comics)
So …S.H.I.E.L.D. Avengers are still on the hunt for the Illuminati and they are not having luck. They start talking about figuring what to do and talk some more…. And they talk… and they talk… dear god do they talk…
My brain is slowly unfocusing as I read this dialogue.
It’s rare. It’s honestly rare to a read comic like this. A comic that seems to go beyond expectations and my thoughts on it and slowly watch as it devolves into a nightmarish mess. This is an ugly comic, hideous on the outside and dry on the inside. The story in question really goes nowhere, just reminding the audience that our heroes are hunting other heroes because they decided to be a bunch of jackasses who mind wiped their former friend and decided to keep the secret that the universe is dying from everyone because they figured they could solve the problem (even though they didn’t do much besides focus on single semi-solution, hope for a deus ex machina, and not seeking outside help). Also, let’s not forget the heroes that are hunting the other “heroes” are also acting like self-entitled, hostile assholes to one another and do not seem to be working on a solution to solve this dying universe problem. I’m sorry, who are we supposed to be siding with here?
Honestly, besides the ending and one scene, there’s really nothing that gets accomplished. We just have the characters being dicks to one another: Hulk & Beast insulting and mocking Captain America & friends, Captain America acting like a douche towards Captain Marvel, Susan Storm being the traitor and still on good terms with Mr. Fantastic, while the rest just blank slates. It’s honestly hard to really care about such an uninteresting and unlikeable group of people who haven’t learned a damn thing since this entire incursion mess began. If Marvel is really going to rebooting the Marvel Universe like rumored, maybe they’re trying to make everyone so unlikeable and so different between this and Avengers & X-Men: Axis that they’ll make the audience desperate enough to want it rebooted so they can have likeable characters once more. It’s utterly amazing how bad something like this can be made and most people do not even bat an eye at it because they’ve become so accustomed to it.
Remember when heroes used to like each other and want to work with one another to save the world? Yeah, what a novel concept.
But hey, maybe that’s just me, a guy who is just fed up and tired of this kind of nonsense from Marvel. What else do we got besides the spinning of wheels and parade of pricks the comic has? Honestly, not much. The pacing is slow as hell, where it feels like it can just drag on and on even with how little is actually happening. The dialogue has some personality (in particular with the end scene), but when it comes to exposition and explaining, it’s drier than the Sahara. The scene when Captain Marvel and Susan Storm are talking to Steve is so lifeless and unengaging that it literally becomes hard to read and focus. I personally kept getting distracted by things happening in the background as I was reading this and had to reread the sections over again. We do get some slight background on what has happened over these past few months to see how the world is changed and that might be interesting to learn more about, but we don’t get enough of it. The book is just draining to read after a while.
But what is more astonishing to me is the artwork. I’m not sure what’s going on with Mike Deodato’s artwork here, but the characters look creepy and unsettling. They look so unnatural and fake. It just doesn’t feel normal and it’s a feeling that’ll be nagging at the back of your head as you read. Other than that, there’s not a lot to say here. The layouts are fine, the coloring is okay but contributes to weirdness of the book, and some of the inking is fine.
The more I look at Captain Marvel, the creepier and more inhuman she seems to become.
Is It Good?
Avengers #37 left me exhausted. The story never really went anywhere until the end, the characters are either unlikeable or underdeveloped, the writing is dull at best, and the artwork feels creepy. I’m not even sure what to say about this book at this point, but that’s just something ugly within it.
