Is It Good? Spider-Man & The X-Men #1 Review

I recently read that Storm is the only hero to be part of the X-Men, Fantastic Four and Avengers…but I guess that changes today! Spider-Man joins the X-Men…is it good?

Spider-Man & The X-Men #1 (Marvel Comics)

Spider-Man has joined the Xavier school so he’s technically not an X-Man, but he might as well be after this issue. He’s joined because Logan has asked him to be a counselor to weed out a double crosser among their ranks. One of the students is a bad guy apparently, but you’d think Spidey was the bad guy in how he was welcomed to the team. Nobody thinks he belongs since he’s not a mutant, but Spidey rolls with it the best he can.

Good point.

It’s abundantly clear from the get go this series is going to be very wordy. It took me nearly 30 minutes to read this 20 page comic because writer Elliott Kalan simply loves his dialogue. It’s not a bad thing, but be aware it’s not going to be the action-packed, super fast-paced comic that so many are these days. Kalan does a good job with the Spidey banter and humor and you get the feeling that he has a very good grasp on the character. We get a fun opening action sequence establishing the awkward unwelcome Spider-Man gets when he shows up, the first class Spidey ever teaches and his first field trip too. Honestly there’s a lot happening in this issue and Kalan deserves a lot of credit for establishing the purpose, the characters and the major plot all in 20 pages.

Of course, the wordy pages do make for a slow read and I wasn’t completely enthralled at every inch of this story. Spider-Man isn’t too funny—more chuckle humor than laughs—and I felt at times the comic should show instead of tell. Overall though, a strong first issue.

The art by Marco Failla is good with a simpler feel than other artists that suits the heavy dialogue. I can’t imagine how long it took him to draw since there seems to be a ton of panels to allow the dialogue to fit. Considering a lot of his work is covered with dialogue bubbles I can’t say he had much of a chance in the way of mise en scène or interesting layouts.

Is It Good?

A good first issue for readers who love to read that has a chipper version of Spidey and an interesting cliffhanger.
