Is It Good? Futures End #34 Review

Patrick Zircher returning to art duty on Futures End? I like the sound of that.

As for the rest of the issue: Is it good?

Futures End #34 (DC Comics)

Writers: Brian Azzarello, Keith Giffen, Dan Jurgens and Jeff Lemire
Artist: Patrick Zircher and Scott Kolins

Story:

The new Firestorm combo of Madison and Jason try hightailing it away from the crazy Dr. Polaris/Yamazake madman. Unfortunately, Madison is still have trouble using her new Firestorm powers, so fighting the madman isn’t going too well.

Meanwhile, Dr. Palmer is inside the brain of the Father Time’s body and has discovered this odd looking leech creature.

Spoiler Corner:

The creature explains that the reason he is obsessed with Brainiac is because the machine destroyed his entire alien race and he doesn’t want to the same to happen with Earth. However, he won’t let anyone get in the way of stopping Brainiac, so the Atom is forced to use his shrink ray on Father Time. The leech and his body go absolutely nuts, with the body dissolving and the Atom growing back to regular size, leech in tow. Time keeps warning them about the danger and Frankenstein dismisses him, saying that he, his friends, and the rest of the heroes can stop whatever is coming. However, Frankenstein is shot in the back and due to his new mortality, starts bleeding to death.

Mr. Faraday and some of the other higher-level Cadmus members get Fifty Sue to round up Cash Cole, Lana Lang, and their special female mercenaries together for a special mission. Even though their island went ka-boom, there’s still a special vault there that could have withstood the blast of a nuclear bomb and they want it to be retrieved.

Batman Beyond’s A.I., A.L.F.R.E.D., detects that Brother Eye is still alive and has discovered his presence at TerrifiTech. However, before he can narrow it down further, A.L.F.R.E.D. is breached and is forced to shut down, warning Terry that he is in danger.

And the AI is currently right. In the distant future, Brother Eye sends back his Batman/Joker hybrid machine creature to take out and kill Terry. The issue ends with the machine appearing in the present right in front of Plastique.

Thoughts:

While most of the issue I found to be mostly uneventful except for one part, the ending cliffhanger is fantastic. This is what I’ve been waiting to see for quite a while and I’m quite excited to see how this all plays out in the next issue. Other than that, the book is pretty much good as always, though it could stand to get back to a faster pace with some of these stories.

This issue had an additional artist besides Patrick Zircher working on it to my surprise, Scott Kolins. Both of their styles are radically different from one another and honestly don’t flow well together. Thankfully, Kolins’ art is kept to only one storyline instead of being all over the place, but it’s just such a random change of pace that it is really odd to look at.

Most Memorable Moment:

I think Father Time just devolved into the pink slime that fast food is made out of.
