The Chicago Organized Workers League is back in full swing after the one-shot fluff piece on The Grey Raven in the previous issue. This issue dives head first into the aftermath of the strike and John Pierce’s murder, but is it good?

The book opens with a scene that is a drastic shift from what Chicago has been experiencing since the rise of C.O.W.L. It is somewhat comical how petty the crime is compared to the reality of the power play happening behind the scenes. Another point of contention is the fact the criminal asks the victims to inform the police he was wearing a mask despite not wearing one the entire time the crime is being committed! What makes this more outrageous, later in the issue the two victims actually listened to him! This action does not fit the personality of the victims nor how they attempted to handle the crime in the first place.

Speaking of things that do not really make sense — there is a fight sequence between Geoffrey Warner and Arclight; you would think an unpowered Warner would not stand a chance against Arclight especially after what we witnessed in issue five. Well, you would be wrong. Warner takes him to the cleaners without even suffering any damage whatsoever. Talk about suspense of disbelief, sheesh!

There was also a scene between Warner and Camden that, while talking about recent happenings earlier in the issue, is mostly a rehash of their meeting from issue five. One cool take away is the depiction of Camden and Warner side by side in two different panels. Reis has half of Warner’s face in the left panel and half of Camden’s in the right panel; combined they look eerily similar, two different sides to the same coin. The depiction really gets your skin crawling when you think about the previous issue and how Warner refused to stoop to his father’s level; yet, he already has and continues to do so.

There were some bright points in this issue; Grant reenters the picture albeit in a wheelchair. It is interesting how Kyle Higgins and Alec Siegel use him; he is the voice/thoughts of the everyday person in Chicago expressing concern about the murder of John Pierce and the recent rise of crime in Chicago, yet he is still optimistic for himself noting he still survived and took down a super.

The most intriguing part of the issue was the introduction of a new character, Evelyn Thompson, a detective in the Chicago Police Department and the role she will play in the ensuing fallout from John Pierce’s murder. My guess, her role will be a big one and she might even fill Pierce’s shoes. She is a detective after all. Speaking of Pierce, Evelyn drops a huge revelation about his past. One thing is for sure John Pierce and his death have and will have a far reaching effect on the happenings in Chicago.

Is It Good?

C.O.W.L. #7 is a rough start to the new story arc. There are a number of sequences in the book which are a little too much to believe or drop you out of the grimy Chicago world with extremely petty crimes. There were a couple bright spots with Reis’ take on Warner and Camden as well as the introduction of Evelyn Thompson and her revelation on John Pierce.
