Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

Laura, with a bit of trepidation, heads with Inanna to Dionysus’ party. Once she gets there, Dionysus helps her let go of her fears and she gives in to his powers of party. Throughout the party, Laura interacts with many of the other gods, including Baphomet, who lets slip that his alibi for the night when the judge died might not be as rock solid as she’d believed.

Cassandra also comes to the party, though she does not get down with everyone else at first. She does have a very interesting interaction with Woden.

The good thing about digital editions is they let you zoom.

Laura also gets a glimpse into the reality of being the god of partying and it’s not all wine, women, and song.

We also meet another new god, and Laura gets her flirt on.

Is It Good?

I will admit that as I am writing this review, I am sick as a dog and hopped up on a lot of medicine, so my judgment may be clouded, but I had a bit of a hard time understanding everything going on in this issue. This also might be intentional on Gillen’s part – it was hard to keep track of what was happening when, and which conversations were happening before others.

There’s also just not a whole lot of plot in this issue, but overall that didn’t bother me much. I enjoyed the ride of the issue, but there could have been more advancement to fan plot, especially now that we know that Dionysus was himself a fan before he was turned.

A big part of what made this issue work is McKelvie’s art and Wilson’s best use of colors to date. The joy and freedom on the ravers’ faces, their dancing—it was all enhanced by Wilson’s colors. This was one of McKelvie’s strongest issues-the art felt more alive and active than any of the previous issues and there are some truly gorgeous panels here.

A good issue, but it did feel a bit like a placeholder. I’m hoping the action ramps up in the next issue.
