Is It Good? Suiciders #2 Review

The first issue of Suiciders was pretty good, but not great. It did a solid job of establishing the world and setting of the Suiciders, carried by decent writing and great artwork. It just felt a bit… lacking when it came to the characters and some areas of writing.

Hopefully things shape up as we check out the second issue. Is it good?

Suiciders #2 (Vertigo Comics)

Let’s get straight to the point: Suiciders #2 is a decent, but just okay follow up to the first issue. It continues the situation with The Saint from the last issue, who accepts a dinner date with the reporter. It also introduces a brand new character, who we saw only on the cover of the first issue and remains nameless. The comic seems to be all about building up both characters here, introducing the idea that the Saint lives a life of lies that is slowly consuming him. The nameless man doesn’t, at first, offer much in the way of a personality since he doesn’t talk all that often; however, you can gather some interesting details about him with the way he focuses on the gladiators from the big game in New Angeles throughout the issue silently.

While the characterization and development going on here is pretty reasonable, the story is sadly not as good and is probably one of the weakest points here. The comic is primarily setup, focusing on the characters and giving some more background to the setting occasionally, but not much beyond that. No real storyline or plot has appeared yet with the comic, except probably the ending depending on how things proceed from there. It does make the comic feel a bit aimless at this point in time and although I’m sure that’ll change soon enough — it’s just problem for the time being that feels a bit disappointing.

The writing on the book is still doing alright. The pacing and story structure are fine and have no real problems to them. The dialogue and narration can feel stilted in areas, but it’s not as bad as the previous issue. In fact, the scene with Navarro and the new character are probably the best when it came to the dialogue. The characterization is good for the two central characters, but the others still leave a bit to be desired at this point, with the exception of Navarro. Ultimately, there’s not much else to say, but nothing to really take huge issue with either.

Bermejo’s artwork remains the strongest point of the book. Outside of one panel with a character awkwardly bending, there’s really no issue to be had here. The characters still look great and remains easily distinguishable from one another. The small bit of action were nice and brutal, flowing very well. The coloring gives the book the right mood and tone with every scene and the locations are always so detailed and feel alive. The comic just looks amazing and feels like a real, breathing universe thanks to the breathtaking art.

Is It Good?

Suiciders #2 is a decent issue overall, doing a good job with building up its central characters quite well and delivering on some beautiful artwork. The story and some parts of the writing still need fine tuning though for this comic to really start shining and showing what it is capable. Hopefully the next issue can do that.
