Is It Good? Intersect #6 Review

The last time I reviewed an issue of the series was back in December 2014. It was at that point, after reading two issues, which I decided to hold off on the book with doing more reviews. At that point, the comic was just too incomprehensible and wild to make out. However, I wanted to come back and review the final issue of the first arc after I read all of the issues back to back. You know, to see if things came together and made some sense. With the first arc ending now, let’s see what happens. Is it good?

Is It Good? Intersect #6 Review

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

I’m just going to get straight into this and say… this was still a real big mess. I could sort of follow what was happening in the issue, thanks in part to the recaps of all the past issues, and now there was this big climactic showdown in a graveyard somewhere that held some sort of importance to Jason and Allison. However, beyond that, I really am not sure what really happened in the end or if even much really happened. Is Allison gone? Is the Kid still alive? Who’s talking at the end? Who was this mysterious girl singing throughout most of the arc? What caused this metamorphasis? Even after reading the ending a couple of times nothing is clear, nothing is really answered in the end, and there’s no sense of satisfaction or sense of anything feeling like it was accomplished.

The writing is still a mess. The pacing is poor and the story structure and transitions are almost nonexistent (it’s hard to know what is happening at points). The characterization is lackluster and any emotional drama doesn’t feel all that strong since it’s hard to know what is happening. We find out that one couple had killed the other for some reason, but we don’t know why or who it was because the narration is vague, and this reveal just happens right out of nowhere because the comic cuts to some random imagery of something else. The dialogue and narration are forgettable to nonsensical a lot of the time, sounding forced and unnatural in different areas. Ultimately, this vague and mysterious tone the comic has just cuts way too much into the writing and takes away from any sense of drama or horror the story can have.

Lastly, there’s the artwork and it is still the prime factor in what makes this comic so bad. The characters are hard to make out, the facial range and emotions feel limited in effectiveness with how odd everything looks, and any sense of movement or motion looks very stiff or static. The layouts are frustrating and hard to follow with how vague everything looks and how some scenes just don’t flow well into others. There’s nothing really interesting looking being depicted in the art, since everything just sort of blends together and loses impact after so many issues. The only positive thing I can say about this was that the art can invoke a sort of supernatural and odd tone to the comic, but everything else does not make good use of it remotely.

Is It Good?

Intersect #6 is where I officially say I’m done with this book for a long time. The story is way too vague and only ever feels clear in the recap portions at the beginning, the writing is lackluster, the artwork makes the comic a pain to read, and this arc feels like we really accomplished or gained nothing in the end. I’m not sure what other people see in the comic, but I cannot under any circumstances recommend Intersect due to its pile of problems. If you want an Image comic that is vague, really weird and supernatural, and has better artwork, just go read Drumhellar instead.
