Baltimore Comic Con 2015: Batman Day Panel Recap

The Batman Day Panel was packed. I showed up just a few minutes late and wasn’t able to find a seat; it was that crowded! The panel was loaded with the VP of Talent Development, Bobbie Chase, Greg Pak, Scott Snyder, Jimmy Palmiotti, Tom King, and James Tynion IV.

The panel went from creator to creator as they discussed their upcoming books. First off, Scott Snyder revealed the opening of Batman #45, one in which he claims is his best ever. It goes a little like this: In the beginning there was nothing, and then there was Batman and it was good. Snyder also revealed the Bat Suit is not just a suit; it also has a partner mode allowing it to go off and fight independent of Gordon. It sounded similar to how Tony Stark used Mark 42 to rescue the Air Force One passengers in Iron Man 3. Snyder also mentioned he wants to explore who Bruce would be if he wasn’t scarred in an alley.

Baltimore Comic Con 2015: Batman Day Panel Recap

Before transitioning to Greg Pak on Batman/Superman, DC teased Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The Turtles, Shredder, and the Foot Clan are being transported to Gotham and looking to find a way back. Along the way, there will be plenty of chaos and Batman is not taken with these newcomers to Gotham.

Pak is taking on the transition of Gordon to Batman head on as he will be looking into the lack of trust between Batman and Superman. However, there is a twist as Gordon is now the new Batman and Superman no longer has his full powers. This lack of trust will lead to Batman and Superman having a falling out. In order to save this relationship, Pak will have Batgirl intervene which will allow Pak to examine the family and personal drama this will lead to. The tension will even lead Superman to raid the Batcave and be forced to adapt new tactics that will be traumatic for him. Pak also reinforced that Vandal Savage will be the new villain and part of the chaos occurring in all of the Superman books.

Tom King touched on his upcoming Robin War event that will be taking place in a number of books including We Are Robins. The event will focus heavily on the Court of Owls and the possibility of Lincoln Marsh being Bruce’s brother may be addressed in the event.

Honestly, most of the information the panel discussed is already available in previews and DC’s solicitations. However, during the Q&A session, Snyder talked about the themes he is hoping to address in the Mr. Bloom arc. One of the biggest questions he hopes to ask is, “Can we all rise to be heroes if Batman is gone?” He wants to examine how people deal with big problems and his belief is that people don’t need superheroes; instead, they need unmasked people working together to solve the problems. Snyder also gave his new villain high honors, calling him the anti-Joker. Bloom is supposed to exemplify the idea of watching out for yourself and no one else.

Outside of the current Batman, Snyder noted he is working on an out-of-continuity Joker story and he addressed the continuity issues happening with Justice League and Batman. DC looks to bring in a more united timeline after the current Darkseid War and Mr. Bloom arc.

Finally, Snyder closed with some advice for writers: “Write about what you are afraid of, explore the wonders and terrors in your head.”
