Titans Hunt #1 Review

Titans Hunt is the final book that is spinning out of DC’s Convergence event, joining Telos, which was pretty average and Superman: Lois & Clark, which was better but had problems of its own. Will this be the true standout of the three new books? Is it good?

Titans Hunt #1 is a bit underwhelming to say the least. The story is pretty vague and unclear about what is going on other than a lot of the original former Titans are starting to sort of remember or have visions of their past selves from pre-reboot. We see characters like Roy Harper, Dick Grayson, Malcolm Duncan, and others who are having these weird moments of deju vu and there’s this sense of unknown danger on the horizon… but that’s it. You don’t know or get anything else other than that and the ending doesn’t leave off on a good or big hook. There’s just nothing really happening in the issue that is exciting or energetic. The best way to summarize the issue is that the comic feels more like a zero issue or would have served better as one of those 8-page sneak peeks DC put out back in May. There’s just not much to chew on here other than some fanservice for fans of the original Titans comics, which doesn’t do much good for new readers.

The writing is perfectly acceptable otherwise. The characterization is on point for everyone and no one seems out of character here (though Garth’s violent murder rampage may not sit well with some people). The dialogue and narration aren’t too bad, though admittedly, there was one more moment that felt funny, but was probably unintentional; this all-knowing narrator responds to one of the characters’ lines that sounds amusingly condescending or mad for some reason. The pacing was fine and there were no issues with the storytelling. There’s nothing wrong with Dan Abnett’s writing here, but it feels like he could have made things more exciting instead of just constantly teasing the audience.

The artwork is split between Paulo Siqueira and Geraldo Borges and neither of them do a bad job. It’s pretty standard superhero style, but they get the job done. The layouts read well, the characters look good and different from one another, the action is fun and flows nicely when it is there, and their styles aren’t too incredibly different from one another. There are some off areas where the foreshortening on the characters look wrong, but that’s really it. Even though there’s not much to analyze, there are no real big problems here with the artwork ultimately.

Is It Good?

Titans Hunt #1 is basically a preview or #0 issue. There’s very little going on in it besides characters being introduced and some hint of danger. The writing and artwork are not bad, but there’s just not a lot here to get out of the comic, especially for a four dollar price tag.
