The Flash #46 Review

Call me crazy but Flash has the coolest power. Imagine all the conventional things you could do with it! Hell even Jason Aaron agrees with me. I take a look at the latest issue of The Flash to answer the question, is it good?

The Flash (2011-) #46 (DC Comics)

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

Essentially what we have here is Flash versus a team of villains all geared in seperate ways to take him out. The odds are stacked against him. This issue is one big superhero brawl and it isn’t pretending to be anything but.

Why does this book matter?

Forget the fact that Flash is one of the biggest superheroes on the planet, has a hit TV show and has a storied past of great comics…the art is stupendous! Brett Booth draws in a very detailed way that reminds me of Jim Lee.

Lot’s of energy in these pages.

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

Writer Robert Venditti and Van Jensen have crafted a fun romp in the Flash universe as we get some great action and a culmination of the villain doing his worst. Basically if you like superhero comics you can’t go wrong here. Flash gets to shine against each villain and things get sticky with the main baddy too. Sure there’s a lot of posturing and jibber jabber from the villain but it’s straight out of the supervillain handbook.

As I said above Booth draws some kinetically charged stuff here. Panels swoop in and out like paper fluttering down from the sky which helps give the villain a chaotic feel. In fact a lot of the layouts curve and twist which helps add energy to the page. The villain is quite freaky here too as he begins to pull in other characters powers he becomes less human looking. This adds a demonic look to him and makes him feel like a bigger threat by the end of the issue.

It can’t be perfect can it?

Since this is mostly all about fight scenes there isn’t much to chew on or digest as far as character and plot. Flash is on a bridge fighting for most of this while his dad is trying to help as a side story. That makes this mostly a visual feast and like most visual feasts it leaves you feeling a bit empty by the end.

Love those layouts.

Is It Good?

A bubblegum meal of fight sequences and bad guys posturing. If you like that sort of thing you’ll love this.
