Star Trek/Green Lantern: The Spectrum War #6 Review

The final issue to the event of the year! Can Green Lantern team up with the Star Trek buddies and take out Nekron? Is this a convoluted elseworlds tale that doesn’t matter? It’s about the journey not the destination, right?

Star Trek/Green Lantern: The Spectrum War #6 Review

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

This issue opens with our heroes taking the fight to Nekron who has recently brought the planet Vulcan back into existence. If you remember from the latest Star Trek films — Vulcan was blown up. Well Nekron not only brought back the planet but all the people on it. That’s gotta be rough for Spock, but at the same time what is Nekron’s game plan? He can’t get off the planet, right? Anyway…

Why does this comic book matter?

Considering it has delivered more awesome action scenes than Secret Wars, fantastic and consistent art and great characterization throughout I’d say those are all important factors in purchasing the final chapter of this series!

Nice!

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

Since this is the final chapter a lot of action goes down, but Mike Johnson still sticks plenty of character moments in to give the action some meaning. Johnson must have a special place in his heart for Scottie (or maybe it’s just because he’s not on the planet with the rest of the main characters), because he gets an awesome moment that keeps Nekron at bay. Oddly Green Lantern takes a back seat as the Star Trek characters use their new rings to kick ass and take names. This gives them all great moments, but it’s a bit surprising.

That’s low Nekron.

Artist Angel Hernandez continues to show us he deserves a primo book after his work here. A splash page with an alien force I won’t spoil here is truly awesome and all the energy and colored rings look great as they shine across the page. Likenesses continue to look spot on too and Nekron looks fantastic too. Overall this climax works because all the action is fun and exciting to look at.

If this climax doesn’t make you a fan of either franchise, then I’m not sure what will.

It can’t be perfect can it?

The lack of heroic moments for Green Lantern is a bit odd and will make those of you reading for his character a bit let down. Things are moving fast though which brings up another issue (which is ultimately an issue with most comic book conclusions) and… that’s how fast things move along. While the series didn’t hinge on Nekron appearing it does seem quick and slightly melodramatic that he comes in and gets wiped out so quickly.

Phasers are not set to stun!

Is It Good?

As far as climaxes go this is how you want an event series to end. The action is fantastic and the storyline wraps up well for all parties. Satisfying and fun!
