Batman and Robin Eternal #10 Review

Okay, so the switch in writers and change in focus wasn’t as impressive as it could have been last time around in Batman and Robin Eternal.

However, let’s put that behind us and look at what happens as Red Robin, Red Hood and Bane face down the mysterious assailant revealed at the end of last issue. Is it good?

Lead Writers: Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly
Other Writers: Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV
Artist: Roge Antonio and Geraldo Borges

Story:

Azrael, or the Angel of Death as he likes to call himself, showed up at the end of last issue — and he’s ready to attack Red Robin, Red Hood and Bane.

The trio ends up fleeing when they get overwhelmed by this new foe and the castle’s powerful guards. Who is this mysterious individual and what is his connection with Mother?

Spoiler Corner:

Flashback time continues as Bruce Wayne tells Robin/Dick Grayson to stand down after he nearly got killed trying to investigate a lead with Scarecrow. After this, Grayson picks a fight with him and eventually says that “maybe they are over being partners.” The flashback ends with Batman returning to Mother and saying that he’ll listen to her offer.

Red Robin and Red Hood eventually locate a computer in one of the castle’s rooms and they hack into it to get some information. Looking through the data, they find out about more of Mother’s operations and some of her plans. Two interesting tidbits include Project: Ichthys (something mysterious that Mother has been cooking) and the fact that Azrael himself is one of her modified humans.

Long story short, Azrael catches up with the two and uses some sort of power on Red Robin that “shows” him a vision, which makes him lose all faith in everything. Jason steps in and rescues Tim and the two of them flee the mysterious monastery. The scene ends with Azrael taking notice of the computer screen and seeing the truth about himself/his origins.

The issue ends with Dick Grayson and Bluebird tracking down a lead on a mysterious individual named David Cain out in British Columbia. When they reach his home, someone called the Sculptor appears and reveals that she knows something about Harper.

Thoughts:

As a whole, this issue felt a little better than the last issue due to more story developments, but otherwise not by much. The characterization seems hit and miss, the dialogue is run-of-the-mill and the action is stilted. The second artist on the issue, Geraldo Borges, isn’t really any better than Roge and the shift between them isn’t very smooth. The only strong points remain the new developments we get with the story in the present and past, including the ending. Otherwise, the issue is just thoroughly mediocre, which is a shame given all the big name characters involved.

Thank God that grabbing onto a flaming sword is perfectly safe, otherwise I would suspect that attack might work.
