Wonder Woman is battling Cheetah on the cover which means we’re getting an action filled issue… right? Right!? Let’s dig in and find out: is it good?
Wonder Woman #47 (DC Comics)
This issue opens with Wonder Woman sitting on the shore of Paradise Island coming to grips with the fact that Ares is back. We are quickly reminded the Amazonians share Wonder Woman’s every emotion and then dig into the meat of the story which is learning Cheetah has arrived on the island to steal the Eye of Antiope — the very thing that grants the Amazons their long lives.
Why does this book matter?
Wonder Woman is coming to grips with being the God of War, but also her ties to her Amazonian sisters. DC is adding new layers to the character which make her a lot more complex, but also tethered to multiple worlds. That has to be tough!
Thinking out loud.
Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?
This issue is organized with different scenes leading up to the Cheetah fight we’re all expecting (from the cover alone) which helps make each turn a bit of a surprise. Instead of having Wonder Woman dive right into a long fight writer Meredith Finch explores the connection to her Amazon sisterhood, a sibling’s new plight and finally how her role as a God has changed her relationship to the Amazon women in general.
It’s also ironic how Wonder Woman wins in the end. I don’t want to spoil it, but as the God of War her ability to win in the way she does is clever.
The art by Miguel Mendonca is quite nice and reminds me of David Finch’s work. It’s very detailed and most importantly never over sexualizes/cheesecakes Wonder Woman. The fight sequence is also easy to follow and suits their fighting styles.
It can’t be perfect can it?
The conclusion is certainly clever, but it’s also one of those endings that makes the entire conflict pointless. Again, I don’t want to ruin anything, but Wonder Woman lacks knowing a certain detail that could have made her pursuit of Cheetah as simple as not pursuing her at all! It essentially makes the entire fight pointless, but we at least get a few scenes between Wonder Woman and other characters so it’s not a complete loss.
Is It Good?
Interesting elements of Wonder Woman’s now very complex connection to the Amazon’s and Olympus are explored well, but the big conflict is rendered pointless with an underwhelming climax.
