Whether you’re stuck on what to go see in theaters this weekend or considering a night of Netflix without the chill, perhaps the answer lies in Dave’s latest batch of bite-sized reviews!

The A-List

3 Second Movie Reviews: 02/05/2016 – Oscar Love, Here We Come
Surreal and intriguing.

Anomalisa (2015)
Genre: Drama
The weirdness of Charlie Kaufman hits all at once and it’s a thought-provoking take on loneliness and the addictive quality of love. It truly captures the cold distance we all feel sometimes.
Grade: A-

The Diary of a Teenage Girl (2015)
Genre: Drama
Heartfelt and nearly always raw with emotion, this flick is a hard-hitting coming of age story. It’s certainly not for the faint of heart, but that’s life isn’t it?
Grade: A-

B’s to the Bone

So the guy in white is a good guy right?

Bone Tomahawk (2015)
Genre: Western
This is a very solid western with a very solid cast. The acting is great, there are funny moments, and it’s all about the journey. Plus, the end is right up there with great horror movie moments.
Grade: B+

Cop Car (2015)
Genre: Drama
Even with a spoilery trailer this flick is solid straight up and down. There are even surprises in store, but above all else it’s never boring and it’s a fun exploration of kids getting in way over their head.
Grade: B+

Not necessarily accurate depiction of the film Infinitely Polar Bear.

Infinitely Polar Bear (2015)
Genre: Drama
Ruffalo is fantastic playing a manic and inventive genius in a Hunter S. Thompson sort of way. The film doesn’t feel as unconventional as his performance though which makes the movie a bit lacking. Still, it’s a nice film about a troubled man trying to be a great dad.
Grade: B

Sleeping with Other People (2015)
Genre: Comedy/Drama
Solid acting from Brie and Sudeikis with a nice message behind it. This is just above most romcoms for its adult nature and humor that stick sticks to character.
Grade: B

‘Batman: The Lost Years’ just wasn’t as successful as most thought it would be.

The Big Short (2015)
Genre: Drama
A solid drama that explains the housing bubble burst between three groups who saw it coming and bet against the economy. The acting is solid, particularly with Christian Bale, but some of the stories feel shorted for time. Still, it has a fast and fresh editing style that propels the dry material well.
Grade: B

Listen closely and you can hear it!

The Revenant (2015)
Genre: Action/Drama
Opening on a scene that’s Saving Private Ryan meets Dances With Wolves, this flick is visceral and all about one man enduring at a time when staying alive is your only job. It’s rife with surprises and always intriguing, but a lot of the symbolism is laid on too thick.
Grade: B+

The Visit (2015)
Genre: Horror
This is a scary movie that is filled with surprises and creepy grandparents! The last 10 minutes do devolve into standard horror cliches, but overall this is a solid film.
Grade: B+

Zoolander (2001)
Genre: Comedy
Sure it’s not laugh out loud funny but the generally consistent stupidity will slap a smile across your face. Plus David Bowie is in it!
Grade: B

Maybe C These Later…

Irrational Man (2015)
Genre: Drama
A little slow to start, but it turns into a nice combo of comedy and drama as Joaquin Phoenix makes a decision between life and death. Overall a middle Woody Allen flick but worth a look.
Grade: C+

Legend (2015)
Genre: drama
A solid gangster flick until it decides to jettison the crazy brother and focus on the conflict of the marriage to a gangster. Still, Tom Hardy is great.
Grade: C+

Sicario (2015)
Genre: Action
Tense with a poignant message plus Emily Blunt kills it with the acting. I found it a bit slow though and there weren’t enough intense war-like scenes!
Grade: C+

3 Second Movie Reviews: 02/05/2016 – Oscar Love, Here We Come
The funniest line in the movie.

Ted 2 (2015)
Genre: Comedy
Similar to a Family Guy episode in that the plot changes quite a bit and the jokes come fast. Sadly it’s not the funniest flick and has long boring bits. Still it’s worth a laugh or two if you like swearing!
Grade: C-

The Danish Girl (2015)
Genre: drama
Doesn’t go deep enough into the emotional crisis for Eddie Redmayne. It’s also hard to feel sympathy as he’s so damn selfish and inconsiderate of his wife.
Grade: C-
