Rick and Morty #13 Review

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

So what’s happening in this series? The fine folks at Oni Press sent us a full preview with a description just for you to check out.

Why does this book matter?

Besides the obvious need to read more Rick and Morty tales?! First off Tom Fowler has been able to capture the voice of the characters quite well so it feels very close to the series dialogue wise. Meanwhile the science fiction element is very strong, with the comic doing well to push the boundaries of mind trippy storylines. The art is also very close the cartoon too. Really, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t check this out.

Rick and Morty #13 Review
Nice moment in the issue.

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

This issue opens in a “Morty-verse” that lives and dies by the rules of Morty’s intelligence. That means spaceships function via pressing buttons (rather than steering) and a lot of basic things are very simplistic. Essentially, they’re dumb. Fowler effectively captures Morty’s innocent stupidity and Rick’s frustrated rage over the whole thing as they go back and forth defending and accusing throughout the issue. At the same time Fowler uses this to progress the plot and play up the fact that nothing really works in this universe with hilarious scenes.

If there was ever a lesson in this issue it’s that you should never touch anything of Rick’s. We quickly meet alternate versions of Rick’s family who have been pushed to the brink of annihilation. It’s nice to see for what seems like the upteenth time that Rick’s family is always ready to go to war even though their day to day lives are incredibly ordinary. It’s like the Rick and Morty universe is trying to tell us we’re all ready to fight if need be. And of course Jerry is the butt of another joke and it works well.

The art by CJ Cannon and color by Ryan Hill mimic the show perfectly. It’s too bad the simplistic style probably gets taken for granted because it’s certainly not that easy to capture the show this closely. With a property like this facial expressions are key in making the humor work and Cannon does not disappoint. Meanwhile the colors convey a sense of atmosphere so we know when the drama kicks it up a notch. Oh and the gore, a big part of why this series is so great, is absolutely great in this issue. I just wish there was more of it!

It can’t be perfect can it?

While the humorous moments–and the entire premise of the Morty-verse being based on dumb logic–work, I wish this book had more laughs. A lot of the time it’s not as much clever as it is Rick just yelling at Morty. And he yells a lot in this issue. Rick is pissed off, because who can he blame but Morty for being so dumb, but there’s too much of it in this issue. Or at least it reads as straight anger rather than justified anger that should be laughed at. More science fiction weirdness or just more jokes would have helped this comic move along.

Because that’s a problem too. The pace is too slow, especially for a comedic comic book. With all the yelling comes lots of dialogue that goes on and on. The characters don’t do much of anything but stand around yelling in this issue.

The buttons are one of the funniest reoccurring gags in the issue.

Is It Good?

Aside from a slower paced issue that’s lighter on laughs than I’d like it still brings humorous moments. The premise of this issue is spot on and so good it probably deserves an actual episode. This is the best and only way to continue your ocular enjoyment of Rick and Morty.
