The Adventures of Supergirl #1 Review

I’ve never seen the Supergirl TV show, but the actress playing her seems spunky and great for the role. The show seems to have a sense of humor too, so why not try out the comic that’s based on the show? Is it good?

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

A digital first comic now being published to paper, what is this book about?

In this issue, when an escaped prisoner from Fort Rozz interrupts a football game, Supergirl is on the scene to take her down. But Rampage is mad about more important things than a sporting event—and no pesky super-hero can stop her quest for revenge!

Why does this book matter?

I’ve found many of the digital first books – from DC and Marvel in particular – are quite good. Basically a single issue is multiple digital issues in one which makes for a more consistently entertaining read. We’re basically reading multiple smaller chapters written to be entertaining on their own. That makes this a possible great first issue.

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?
Writer Sterling Gates manages to introduce Supergirl, her sister, the villain Rampage, and fill it with plenty of action too. I’m not completely in love with the character as of yet – maybe she’s too goody two shoes for me – but this is well written comics. The spunk you see in Supergirl in the show (for me the commercials) is definitely there and she’s certainly not weak or a cliche either. By tethering her human sister into things Supergirl has more to fight for, especially since she has a connection to Rampage.

Dang she’s huge.

Rampage is basically a Hulk (though her backstory is interesting) like character, but when she depowers she’s interesting on her own. Clearly there’s some complicated back story going on and that’s revealed here too. As all superhero comics go the ending is somewhat satisfying, but also leaves you wanting more as not all loose ends are tied up. Gates however sets up a conflict between Supergirl and her sister that will be fun to see progress. The fact that Supergirl works for a government agency certainly makes her angle on the superhero genre interesting and her sister being a part of that interesting further.

Artist Bengal (only one name listed) draws a detailed but somewhat cartoony comic here. I’m reminded of Invincible when reading and you can see it in the action, but also the faces especially with the comically shocked or surprised ones. Bengal makes Supergirl tough when she needs to be, but also vulnerable to bring her down to a human level too. Bengal’s colors also pop quite nicely, again, giving the book a cartoony feel.

It can’t be perfect can it?

I’m not a huge fan of how Bengal draws Supergirl’s X-ray vision powers as she looks like a Stepford wife. Aside from that all’s good though!

Though it’s obvious Supergirl and her sister care about each other with some solid captions letting us know who was the “big” sister — I wasn’t sold on the relationship. Maybe it’s because I didn’t watch the show, but they don’t really care for each other besides bickering or being tough on each other throughout the issue. Maybe that’s the relationship, but it made it difficult to care about their bond. This in turn made the issue mostly an introduction with less of an emotional impact.

Ouch.

Is It Good?

Having not watched the show I found this book to be a fun read. Plenty of action, good introductions to Supergirl and the villain and a well rounded story from beginning to end.
