I Am Legion Review

I consume anything vampiric. Mention the strigoi and I am all in. Anne Rice, Bram Stoker, Darren Shand, Stephen King the list goes on; so when I heard about I Am Legion I wanted first dibs. This book combines vampires and Nazis, whose interest wouldn’t be piqued?

It is 1942, the British Council sets out to investigate the murder of a wealthy man and uncovers far more than a usual crime scene. Meanwhile the Nazis are working on a secret weapon, a young girl with special abilities that they hope will give them ultimate power. It’s a time of espionage and intrigue. The Allies are working diligently to counter the Nazi’s plans, both are fighting for power, but what neither side knows is they would get caught up in a deadly, family quarrel that is older than time.

When I first started reading the book I thought it was a bit reminiscent of The Strain but the story unfolded and found its own voice. There is an incredible amount of detail revealed in the dialogue and you need to pay close attention to keep it all straight. I think that overall Fabien Nury’s story captured the time period well and the complexities of reconnaissance; I did however, come away feeling that he just grazed the surface of many of the characters. There are so many players in this narrative, knowing more about their back story would have helped cement them in your mind and deepen the story. Yet again, that may make this a six volume series instead of three.

A few times I found myself wishing the story would progress more quickly. The book is dialogue heavy in sections and while the dialogue is interesting, I was craving action. Don’t worry all you have to do is turn a few pages and the action hits with a vengeance.

I Am Legion has a cinematic quality to it. The dialogue would work very well in a movie and each panel is drawn meticulously. You get the sense that a camera should be rolling inches from the characters’ faces. The artwork is very impressive. John Cassaday does an exquisite job of capturing a range of emotions across all the characters faces. In each moment you feel their pain, sense their fear and experience their horror.

Did I like it? I did. If you are a history buff or a Dracul fan this book is worth a read. The artwork alone is worth the glance. I think this is one of those stories that resonates with you after reading. Like when you go to a movie and discuss it after (wait am I the only one who does that?).

My Fears? People will give up halfway. It does drag a bit at times so hang on. In the end I think it is worth it.
