Pokemon Go: Top Ten Must Have Pokemon

Sure, you haven’t had much trouble catching them all — but now that you’ve got ’em, which ones will serve you best on the Poke-battlefield?

Having a high CP is important, but it’s not the only determining factor for which Pokemon you should send into the fray. The following are the ten most valuable Pokemon in the game determined by battle conducive stats, move power and damage capacity; so make sure to raise these ones with proper care if you want to conquer gyms and steamroll your opponents. (Special thanks to Reddit user natron77 for compiling the data.)

Terms to Know:
STAB – Same Type Attack Bonus, which increases the power of a direct attack X 1.25 if the one of the user’s types is the same as the attack’s type.

1. Snorlax

He might be lazy, but when it comes to Pokemon Go battling, Snorlax is no slouch; because the Speed stat hasn’t been factored into Pokemon Go the same way it has in the actual Pokemon games, Snorlax’s stat distribution reaps all the benefits and none of the disadvantages. His 320 Stamina stat is the second highest in the game (only Chansey’s is higher) and he has the overall highest stat total (680), edging out other vaunted Pokemon like Dragonite, Lapras and Arcanine; Snorlax’s monster stats make him an absolute wall that can deliver a Licking (1200 Move Power) and keep on ticking.

2. Vaporeon

If you’re still on the fence about which Eeveelution will serve you best, look no further: Vaporeon is a bulky beast. Water types are in a very good place in the current Pokemon Go meta (thanks to their stats, a STAB Water Gun being one of the strongest attacks in the game and lack of very strong Grass or Electric counter-types) and Vaporeon is thus far the best of the bunch. He’s relatively easy to obtain if you know the Eeveelution trick as well.

4. Lapras

A fat Stamina stat, (tied for 4th highest with Vaporeon), 3rd highest overall stat total and Water/Ice type combination (Frost Breath is super effective against Dragon, Flying, Grass and Ground) make Lapras a formidable Pokemon to add to your squad.

6. Golem

While he may not have Explosion like he did back in the RBY days, Golem still has a good overall stat count (in the Top 25) and is an excellent wall against Electric-type Pokemon.

7. Dragonite

The mighty Dragonite has the highest Attack-stat in the game (250) and second highest overall stat count (644). And just like the RBY days, it’s the only Dragon-type in the game so far, so milk him while he’s still a unique, Dragon Breathing snowflake.

9. Golduck

The final form of Misty’s staple Psyduck Pokemon is no joke in Pokemon Go; another Water-type with good overall stats and a STAB Water Gun breaks the Top Ten — noticing a trend here?

Sick of seeing Vaporeon and other Water-types running rampant in the meta? Fight back with Exeggutor; it may not have a STAB Grass move as its most damaging attack like Venusaur or Tangela but its resistance to Water Gun and third highest attack stat in Pokemon Go (236) make it a very useful Pokemon to have on your roster.
