Harley Quinn #3 Review

Can you believe this series has Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy fighting off hordes of zombies? So cool and fun, but can it stick the landing? Is it good?

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

So what’s it about? The official DC summary reads:

“DIE LAUGHING” part 3! In this concluding chapter, Coney Island threatens to collapse completely under a tidal wave of zombies! Harley’s got a lead on a cure—but what’s it going to take to administer it to a thousand flesh-hungry fiends? Here’s hoping Poison Ivy has an idea…

Why does this book matter?

Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti know how to have fun. You shouldn’t expect a tear jerker but just classic crazy fun and what isn’t fun about zombies? The first issue introduced an alien who was accidentally ground up in beef which created the zombie hordes but things seem to be taken care of (more or less). This issue closes that story out.

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

Harley Quinn #3 Review
Totally casual showering for the win.

The writing team ends up using the age old deus ex machina to resolve things which is unfortunate, but they introduce this element early on which gives the book a bit of expectation and anticipation for the reader. It’s clear this three issue arc was meant to bring Harley and Ivy back together and they do so effectively. They not only canoodle a bit early on, but get to bond throughout the journey too. They end the issue with the characters loving their insanity together and the reader is reminded the best of these characters comes out when they’re together.

There’s plenty of action in the issue and even Red Tool gets some time to shine. Given, he’s sitting in a hospital bed, but there’s a big laugh waiting for you in his scenes, which of course involves a lewd joke. The pace of the issue bounces around just enough keeping you interested and never getting bogged down with too much exposition.

Bret Blevins draws the layouts with finishes by Chad Hardin and John Timms. Hardin does a good job with the sexier scenes (he gets the brunt of the Harley/Ivy disrobbing and bathing scenes) with a darker tone and finer detail. Timms does a good job with the second half of the issue, doing well with facial expressions and the big finale of action. Colors by Alex Sinclair (and Hi-Fi on page 10) give the book the amount of cartoon pop it requires.

It can’t be perfect can it?

Remember that it’s all about the journey and the deus ex machina of it all won’t bother you. Ultimately the writers came up with a device to give us zombies in a non cliched way which feels like a win.

Nice pipe dude.

Is It Good?

If you love Harley and Ivy together you can’t miss this issue. It does a good job bringing them together and showing us key bonding all wrapped up in a zombie plot.
