Injustice universe: Enter Deathstroke. Given how dark this series has been, I’m surprised this hasn’t happened sooner as this is the perfect title for this type of character. Plus, given the cover of this issue, Batman and Lex are orchestrating his arrival. Sounds great, but is it good?

Why does this book matter?
With the new game coming out this series is a must read for anyone who wants to know how we’ll get there. Plus, who doesn’t like to see Superman as the villain?

Writer Brian Buccellato puts together a solid issue here – though of course this was originally published digitally – as it sets up Deathstroke’s entry, focuses in on his mission, and then closes with a bang. The reason for Deathstroke’s entrance makes sense (though it’s odd to see Batman in Bali…in full costume) and his mission has high enough stakes to be entertaining. Plus, there are a few surprises including a battle you’ll never see coming. It all ends in a bookend sort of way with the same characters that started it all, which is a nice segue to the next issue too.
Artist Mike S. Miller pulls off quite a lot in Injustice: Gods Among Us: Year Five #18, from the Batman costume looking complex, to Deathstroke fighting off hundreds of guards. Deathstroke’s sword fight is quite striking too as it comes off as a dance of sorts which Miller pulls off in an elegant sort of way.
It can’t be perfect can it?
If you’re getting this issue to see a bunch of heroes you’ll be slightly disappointed, because Deathstroke really is the featured player throughout. There’s other heroes very briefly, but this is all an aside sort of mission issue to get something key into the right characters hands. The only other gripe I could find is the art looks rushed at times and may not stand up to everyone’s expectations all the way through; for a digital comic it succeeds though.
