DC has a bit of a secret event book on their hands with this series. You wouldn’t know it given the weekly news cycle, but it’s delivering an action-packed, high stakes story that feels as big as any summer tentpole picture. The pieces are moving into place for a major showdown, but how is issue #6? Is it good?
Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #6 (DC Comics)
So what’s it about? The DC summary reads:
“SINESTRO’S LAW” part six! It’s an all-out assault on Warworld, but Hal Jordan is alone and outgunned facing off against the full force of the Sinestro Corps.
Why does this book matter?
Robert Venditti has been crushing it with good character work and big ideas. Hal Jordan has found a new source of power within himself which is exciting due to the nature of it being so new. The idea that Sinestro has been policing the universe is interesting and with the Green Lantern Corps back and ready to fight, a war is definitely on.
Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?
Are there any good looking Yellow Lanterns?
Fans wishing for more Hal Jordan are in for a treat as he makes his triumphant return to fight the Yellow Lanterns in this issue. There’s plenty of fighting with constructs being created and Yellow Lanterns ferociously trying to stop him. The thing is, Venditti has made Hal more powerful than ever and it’s great fun to see Hal cut through them like butter. The mechanisms of the plot are moving into place nicely too. The Green Lantern Corps, Guy Gardner (recently imprisoned by the Yellow Lanterns) and Sinestro all move ever so slightly toward the battle that’s to come.
The art by Rafa Sandoval is quite nice, with dark and well rendered inks by Jordi Tarragona. The constructs look great (and really pop from Tomeli Morey’s colors) and he manages to make all the yellow in this book varied and complex. There’s also one heck of a full page spread of Guy that’s quite good, conveying his willpower and heroics all at once though he’s chained and beaten. It’s a reminder Guy is a unique hero and there’s nobody else like him.
It can’t be perfect can it?
All in all this is a table setting issue. Like I said above, the plot threads are touched upon, but mostly don’t move past a few steps forward rather than large leaps. Clearly a bi-weekly book like this doesn’t need to deliver huge advancement since we’ll be reading the next chapter so soon, but issues like this lack the character work that make the experience worthwhile. There’s nothing wrong with the issue per se, but by the end you’ll wish there was more.
