Last month, IDW’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series started a promising new story arc (aside from the part where Splinter acts like a complete douche canoe). This week, TMNT follows up on Harold’s captivity, the Turtles’ uneasiness, and Splinter’s aforementioned douchiness.
Is it good?
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #63 (IDW Publishing)
Observations
- Leo needs to step up and say something.
- Meanwhile, Harold is handling his kidnapping like a total boss.
- Eh…Splinter makes a halfway decent point there. He’s still being a douche, though.
- GET ‘EM, HAROLD!
- Wow. That didn’t work at all.
- Exes are a lot scarier when they’re armed with a high-powered mech suit.
- Oh snap.
Is It Good?
Now we’re starting to get somewhere!
I’ve been extremely critical of this series over the past year, but I really like what Tom Waltz is doing with his arc. While I still have some major issues with Splinter’s extremely out of character behavior, it’s allowed Harold to shine in a way that has made him one of my favorite supporting characters.
And while the Phantoms might be a little lame, his interpretation of Darius Dunn is great—equal parts cold and malicious.
On the art side of things, Dave Wachter continues to turn in beautiful pages, especially when the action starts. His best work, however, is saved for the last page, which features a twist that could lead to a very cool new plot thread.
But whether it does or not it looks like we’re in for one hell of a fight next month—and for the first time in a long time, I can’t wait to read the next issue of this series.
