Hadrian’s Wall #2 Review

With the first issue of Hadrian’s Wall, we were invited into a near future sci-fi world, with off site cold war tensions, murder mysteries, and deeply troubled protagonists with a Blade Runner Noir meets 2001 aesthetic.

How’s issue #2 hold up, and move the story forward?

In short: there’s been a suspected murder, in space, and Simon Moore is on the case. I love when comics give synopsis panels, so here’s the goods:

This mystery crosses all sorts of boundaries. Simon, our pill popper, used to be married to Annabelle, another member of Hadrian’s crew. The dead man? Annabelle’s late second husband–a man who shot Simon a few years back several times, leading to Simon’s pill habit.

With me so far? We’re talking deep creepy connections that are slowly unravelling during this investigation. Makes me think of this, but a little less charming and HBO.

Is It Good?

This is a classic LA mystery a la Chandler, set in space, and the stakes are getting higher. Characters’ hidden motivations are becoming front and center, the autopsy results are throwing more fuel on the fire, and someone has destroyed Simon’s pain pills, so withdrawal is impending. As everything is building, the pressure on Simon is getting heavier, and the forces allied against him are getting desperate.

This feels like pure episodic mystery goodness, and is worth the individual issues.

TL:DR – SPACE MURDER MYSTERY.
