Why does this book matter?
When it comes to fight comics you know you’re in for a little something extra when Deadpool is involved. That’s because of the non-stop banter but also the silly nature he can bring to a battle. Cue Cullen Bunn and Iban Coello, and you know you’re in for a ride.
Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?
Fun opening.
A big bonus with this issue is the fact that literally anyone can pick it up and find it fun, but also follow along as well. That’s because Machine Man introduces (with exciting slanted panels) each of the heroes and villains in the opening pages in a clever, fun sort of way. The issue opens right in the middle of a fight sequence and doesn’t let up ’till the very end which is an exciting bit of storytelling. Along the way Deadpool hams it up, requests more attention and even leads his team to victory well (more or less).
As far as climatic issues go it also keeps the fighting interesting and purposeful. The final two pages serve as an epilogue too so you’re left wanting to see where it’s all going.
The art by Coello zings with 90’s flair, complete with big breasted women (okay this is kind of a negative in my opinion but to each their own), eye catching energy blasts, and high detailed punching. The layouts mix things up, well-timed closeups drop throughout and the visual comedy lands too. The colors by Guru-eFX are bright and suit the superhero fighting.
It can’t be perfect can it?
Okay so, seriously, the breasts are out of control in the book. It’s something I’ve seen less of these days, but damn, everyone is popping out of their costumes to the point where it’s comedic and it wasn’t intended to be!
As fight comics go, the fighting is interesting, though the conclusion leaves you wanting more. It’s not that it doesn’t make sense, but it’s just that it’s too easy. File this under unearned endings.
