Kid Flash is ready to stretch his legs. Luckily for him, there are some new villains out and about in Central City just waiting to be caught. But before he gets out on his own he’s going to have to learn how to control himself while balancing his hero life and his every day. Barry is starting to worry he’s made another mistake while training Wally. There are so many things to think about when you become a superhero and sometimes you just have to take a step back and look at the big picture. If you don’t, you might get in over your head. Is it good?
Flash #10 (DC Comics)
‘The Speed of Darkness’ is the newest installment of The Flash. This will be part one in the series. The first few pages are great; they’re introducing our new antagonist and they look awesome. The artistic take with black and white is beautiful. The artistic team for the series is changing up a bit-Watanabe, Albert, Sotomayer-and their time and effort are showing. This story line is again more geared towards Wally but it is in the perspective of Barry for most of the issue. There’s a lot of questioning of decisions on almost all fronts. Iris is worried about Wally and is putting herself in a parental role, Barry is worried about Wally and how he’s handling the responsibilities of being a super hero, and Wally–overachiever–is working on balancing his involvement with the Teen Titans, being Flash’s partner, and making his way through high school without burning out. I’m loving the overall definition of each character in this issue. We haven’t seen a lot of Iris and Wally lately and it’s good to see their relationship again. There’s a friend side and a parent side that is written really well. I think Wally will be getting into a lot more trouble soon though. The next few issues are going to have a much darker direction.
The new art team is doing great, but there are a few lackluster pages and some over/under done facial expressions. A few really emotional images seem a bit uncomfortable, not emotional. I’m also noticing a few places where the characters are out of place with the background. Some dark outlines make them look a bit copy/pasted.
Besides a few minor details, I’m actually really excited to see the next part to this story. I’m getting pulled into the universe!
