The X-Files #8 Review

Scully takes a road trip to Europe to find Fox Mulder, who is being mind-controlled by some type of ancient force (who may or may not be David Duchovny’s agent). Is it good?

Observations

  • Mulder needs some eye drops.
  • These ancient spirits need to work on their conversational skills.
  • Pretty sure that pilot isn’t following regulations.
  • Since when does Scully say “KI-YAH” while kicking someone’s ass?
  • Sure wish all airplanes had this type of preventative tech.
  • Now there’s a name I haven’t heard in a while.

Is It Good?

Despite a last page that scratched my nostalgia itch (and some great artwork from Matthew Dow Smith), I’m honestly at a loss to explain what the hell is going on right now.

I get that this ancient spirit is all-powerful—and maybe its reach will be explained further at some point. Right now, however, it just seems to be able to show up whenever and wherever its needed to create a dramatic moment.

And while I do love the reference to Old Ones (Lovecraftian language is one of the quickest ways to my heart), the threat they pose at this point is still incredibly vague. And why the heck are the Old Ones treating Mulder so differently from everyone else they’ve encountered? I know that the practical reason is that he’s a main character, but we need a better narrative reason than that to make the story work.

Maybe Joe Harris will start to tie all this together in the next issue. He’s certainly proven himself capable of complex story telling before. Unfortunately, the current arc of IDW’s X-Files series makes me wish it would finish and move onto the next one as soon as possible.
