Spider-Man 2099 #18 Review

As if it weren’t bad enough The Hand created an offshoot group called The Fist, they might actually succeed in bringing forth the end of the world. Now it’s up to the incredibly bizarre trio of Spider-Man 2099, Captain America 2099, and Elektra 2016 to stop them.

Is it good?

Observations

  • Iron Man 2099 is kind of pathetic…which is also kind of awesome.
  • Nice to see Elektra willing to compromise with Miguel on not killing a dude.
  • I would make a comment about how assassins should dress less conspicuously, but Elektra kind of disproves my point.
  • That wonderful moment turned into a sad one way too quickly ☹
  • Gotta say, I’m loving Cobra Commander’s new threads.
  • No idea what the heck is happening to everyone, but it’s pretty terrifying/cool.

Is It Good?

While it might be hard to envision a story involving Elektra and two characters from the 2099 Universe, Peter David can make just about any character combo work. It’s particularly fun watching Miguel and Elektra interact, especially when you consider how ruthless Miguel can often seem compared to Peter Parker.

Story-wise, the issue suffers a bit from being a middle chapter. The Fist’s master plan becomes seemingly obvious by the end, but their methods still aren’t entirely clear. Thankfully, Will Sliney’s gorgeous pencils make up for the ambiguity with some gruesome visuals. Sliney may have a reputation for clean/sleek line work, but the dude’s definitely got some good horror chops, as well.

And speaking of horror, Peter David takes some time out from the main story to give us a three-page interlude that will rip your heart out. I won’t give it away here, but I will warn you temper the relief and excitement you feel so the fall doesn’t hurt quite as much. (In all seriousness, though, it is a great scene).

I’m still not a big fan of The Fist or their bizarre/inefficient methods of villainy, but David’s dependably great dialogue and Sliney’s wonderful artwork continue to make Spider-Man 2099 a consistently enjoyable book.
