One of the joys of Dan Slott and Mike Allred’s Silver Surfer series is how adventurous it can be; the series captures a wonderfully endearing side of the Marvel universe and it can do so oftentimes in a single, self-contained issue. This issue is just that, but is it good?

Why does this book matter?

Aside from the endearing quality, this series a lot of fun with crazy imaginative plots and aliens to enjoy. Allred’s work is incredibly unique and the colors by Laura Allred are, ahem, out of this world.

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

Back seat driver…

This issue is all about size and the scope in which life exists in the universe. Dawn and Surfer enter a giant space whale and soon discover there’s a complex society of smaller creatures inside. As these weird creatures appear a threat rears its head and the only solution is a story from Surfer and Dawn’s past exploits. Slott does a wonderful job segueing into this story and it continues the theme of big and small quite beautifully. There’s a clever bit of storytelling here that flips the script on Surfer’s herald status that fans should not miss.

Allred’s art is wonderful as always too. The opening pages show us how Dawn and Surfer end up in the giant whale with a fun cross section panel used to show them inside the beast. The little creatures inside have a sort of Nickelodeon look to them that’s cute and yet weird in a fun sort of way. The story ends up having a wonderful conclusion too which involves size and all things cosmic that Allred renders beautifully.

It can’t be perfect can it?

The scope of the story isn’t quite as impressive as other issues. Though it is sweet and fun which is hard to fault, it feels like a lesser known story that’s not quite as fantastic as you might hope.
